  1. To overlook a dogs fitness is proper stupid. How can a unfit dog be expected to perform to a high standard. Fitness and nutrition are one and the same, without correct nutrition top fitness in a dog cannot be achieved. If a dog is asked to run regular then again it's nutrion will have to be top grade. I know a few dog lads who beleive that because it's a lurcher it will always run and run regular with a little bit of fitness work, these are usually the lads who's dogs are finished after a couple of runs in a morning and the dogs are worn out well before the end of the season. If all this fitne
  2. Watch some of the many coursing tapes that are available and you'll see how a dogs tail moves when it's turning and slowing up. If you watch any waterloo cups tapes you'll be able to see it pretty clearly. Tail movement on a dog is alot easier stop on tape. As Tomo says though i've seen dog's with curly and injured tails still run well. All the best Tommy
  3. R 8 Joe B !! What i've been told about protein consumption in both humans and dogs is that protein is used to repair muscle cells that have been broken down through exercise etc. This is proteins main job. So when a dog is running regular and using his muscles the muscle wears and needs repairing. If the protein level is to low then the repairing process will take longer. If the dog is run regular then i find it hard that the dog can be given to much protein, but if the dog isn't been run and is still fed a high protein diet then what is happening is that the protein is being wasted. The d
  4. Personally when getting a dog fit for the up-coming season i like to use two methods of exercise these been lead walking and free running. I have tried a few different methods of getting my dogs fit and have now settled on a way that works for my present dogs, this is greatly important as each individual dog will need different training to bring it to it's physical peak. My saluki crosses after a hard season will be given a good few months off after the season has finished (April - May), were they are given a small daily walk and probably a swim a few times a week in the local lake. During t
  5. I felt a right twat when i thought we might need to dig him out and he didn't have a collar on, but i suppose we live and learn and next he'll definitly be wearing a collar. As for sticking to my running dogs, I run my saluki crosses usually twice a week throughout the season (wednesday - Sunday) and I dont do nothing on a saturday mornings so that could soon become terrier Day . Just a question for you terrier men, even though the dogs 4 year old do you reckon now he's been to ground and experienced working a fox that he'll be likely to enter again. As you boys can probably tell when i
  6. I've been into Running dogs for quite a few years now and have never had more than a passing interest in the terrier game, only keeping my terrier for bushing and never trying him to ground. That was until this morning. The terrier i have is a Red fell type and is now 4 years old and i've had him since he was 5 months. The only work i use him for is bushing both foxes and rabbits to the gun, and he's proved to be quite handy. This morning while at home waiting for the frost to leave the ground before taking the running dogs out i had phone call from a good mate saying his lurchers had marke
  7. Just ordered four tickets for me and a few of the lads. It should be a good night and of course the money's going to a great charity. C u there !!! All the best Tommy

    Training,..

Re Stollen Dumbell exercises for back include dumbell pullovers, dumbell rows dumbell/barbell deadlifts (the bees knees). With a barbell you could do good mornings or hyperextension, which are great for lower back. For shoulders i think that dumbells are great to use. You could normal shoulder press, lateral raises, front raises, rear delt raises (bent over dumbell laterals), dumbell up-right rows and of course dumbell shrugs. Try searching on google for weight training and look for dumbell activitys there's loads !!! All the best Tommy

    Training,..

R 8 Kye, i work at gym three days a week and have worked there for the past two years. The jobs great because i don't start work to 3.30 in the afternoon, which through the winter gives me plenty of time out with the dogs. After Christmas me and my training partner started a new training programme, which we train each body part once a week training three exercises on each body part. The exercises are done for three sets doing reps in the range of 10,8,6. We've finished this programme now and the gains in strenth were great. Now we are totally different, lighter training each body part once a
  10. Come Febuary time every year and the season is quickly coming to an end i always try and set a few days away to be out with the dogs !!! This year has been no exception and starting from sunday 19th i had three great days out hunting. Strike 1 !!! I went out on sunday with my two running dogs, as usuall and had a good morning out as we saw plenty of quarry and had some good runs, with both both mine and my mates dogs. Its just great to be out and you always seem to appreciate it more towards the end of the season when you know the long BORING summers just around the corner. The down side of
  11. Looks like you had a good night out mate !!! Is the white rough haired dog bred from the Nipper lines, as it looks very simular ??? All the best Tommy

I've read the book many times and even though i'm not into shooting i found it really interesting. I found that some old poaching books were just full of the same old shite, but have always thought that this book was alot more truthful. He says he went poaching firstly for the fun of it and secondly the game that he shot. All the best Tommy.
  13. When talking about our dogs diets we always mention the protein percentage, but carbohydrates are of equall importance and are usually overlooked. Without a good level of carbs in a dogs diet, its energy level cant be expected to be great. Usually the day before i know my dogs are due to run i will slightly increase their carb %. The simple foods that can be used to do this are mashed potatoe and pasta. You do have to be carefull with the amount of carbs as to much could cause cramping when the dog is run. All the best Tommy
  14. Just been talking to a ex-greyhound trainer and he said he always left the toe to heal naturally if it was the first time it had broken. If the toe broke again then he would consider amputation or 'pin firing'. He was saying he always gave the toe 4 - 6 weeks to heal, with dog having little to NO exercise. All the best Tommy.
  15. R 8 Fella's, been out this morning with the dogs and my bitch has broken her front inside left toe while running on a concrete farm track. The break didn't seem to cause the dog much pain as she allowed me to strap it up pretty tightly. In the past if a dog broke a toe we would strap it up and let it heal on it's own. They then weld/callus together and becomes one bone and they never broke again. Any suggestions, what course of action do you usually take ???? All the best Tommy.
  16. R 8 Countryman !!! My experiences with Saluki crosses have been that most are pretty early starters, but this trend was changed with my mates present dog as he didn't start to shape up until he was a good 18 months. My own bitches were running rabbits at 10 months and i started running them on the Big Rabbits just before they were 12 months. I went out with a bloke two seasons back and he had a pair of 8 months old pups that he was just slipping in late to give them some education, it seemed to work as they made a pair of decent dogs. I suppose as it's been said many times before it depends o
  17. I thought i share my mornings experiences of a great day out with the dogs. There always seems to be one day in a season that sticks in the mind and today (even though we've caught more on other days) will take some beating. We went out this morning with the usual team (my two Saluki lurcher bitches and my mates 3/4 Saluki, 1/4 Greyhound and Saluki Lurcher dog) on some land that holds a large amount of our desired quarry. But the amount we saw today took some believing. The morning started well with my mate getting a good long run with his young Saluki lurcher, but the trouble was as he came

    RAIN

Mate's been around North Lincs today and the lands as dry as a bone. We should be out in the morning and the Weather has forcast rain overnight, just keep those fingers crossed.
  19. I suppose we've all had experience of meeting 'Dog Dealers' and obviously MONEY is their only priority. A character i met had a lovely looking Jack Russell bitch that was coming up for a year old and he openly admitted it hadn't seen anything, not even been on a Lead. When bumping into him about a month later the said bitch was in pup!!! He told me that she was really keen and when asked what she had seen, he told me "two rats" that had been caught in a cage trap and ragged a few foxes, that had been pulled by his running dogs. Now i'm no Terrierman (having just the one bushing dog), but mor
  20. I was out on Wednesday and the ploughs were bone dry, yesterday and today the frost has set in to make things worse. Could do with some heavy rain to soften the ground up before the season comes to an end. C u later, i'm of to do my RAIN DANCE
  21. Talking to a mate who does are lot of ferretting in the dales and he told me that he had 13 rabbits and 8 were carrying young and went up a couple of days later, near the same land and got 21 and none had young. Strange in't it. Got one of those Long Eared Rabbits   on saturday and it showed signs (fur missing, cuts to face, bloody nose) that it had been Boxing.
  22. Watch for the dog knocking its feet in the next couple of days as they could start bleeding again. They bleed like f**k. I once clipped a neighbours dogs nails and ended up murdering a few, both dog and owner weren't happy.
  23. Out yesterday morning and seen loads a rabbit on ground as if they'd been bucking up. Finding that Hares are starting to sit in pairs and seen one lot boxing last week. Looks like the seasons slowly coming to an end. Soon be listenin to people talkin bollocks at shows...... cant wait .
  24. I haven't been on here for a while, but it looks like there's still plenty of arguing/conversation going on. . Speaking from experience, in that my old man own's a deerhound and had a couple of first x's i find that like most breeds of dog they have there limitations. They seem to have a great nose, plenty of trainability and usually enough speed and stamina. But personally i wouldn't be interested in keeping one, there just not my type of dog. As for Deerhounds been faster than Saluki's i know what i've seen and i would definitly favour the Saluki. (Personal Opinion). People always see
  25. we do most of our running around North Lincolnshire and up to now (touch wood) we ant had any bollocks. pre *** we'd see loads of lads with dogs, but now it's alot quiter. i can honestly say that this season has been one of the best and both my dogs have had plenty of action, usually running at least twice a week. all the best Tommy
