Yes, it went both ways, east and west. The running dogs of India and China will have been influenced by the Middle Eastern dogs as well as those of Iberia such as the Ibizan hound . Just out of interest, when talking to Arabs about Salukis, they call them “sloughi’s”. Cheers.
-
Very narcissistic and egotistical to think it’s about you ! A tad more humility and modesty may be required ! LOL ! Cheers.
-
You just don’t get it ! Wnning a Racing Championship with a whippet is the pinnacle of whippet racing, and getting the dog ready, at the peak of condition for that once a year event is an achievement in itself. Then to change breeds and win events with Salukis and greyhounds means, to me, that the man knew his stuff and wanted different challenges . Completely different types and events. Cheers.

I never met the owner but I know lads over Carlisle way that said it’s true. Most of us used the non-peds as “dual purpose” dogs back then, racing and hunting. I don’t know one non-ped owner now who would risk their dog by hunting now . Getting their dogs ready for the big races is all they think about now. This one of mine, back in the late 60’s, Blue Prince, (Blue Boy x Zarwood), won plenty races, had no trouble with hares, and took the odd roe. Cheers.

Indian Joe ran at 30lb and won both his titles on greyhound tracks. Very unusual for a non-ped whippet x greyhound dog to be so light, but that’s the whole purpose of non-peds; to breed an animal with the size of a whippet and the speed of a greyhound. Cheers.

Indian Joe; Cheers.
-
Don’t forget, Indian Joe was more than 50% greyhound, and the whippet side was mainly non-ped. Cheers.

Sad thing is that unscrupulous Saudis pretend to be philanthropists and tell Pakistani workers “I’ll pay for your family to come to Mecca to do the Haj.” When the family are about to board the plane in Pakistan, they are told, “oh, by the way, just take this suitcase with you”. If they get through, everyone’s a winner; if they don’t, they get chopped, the Saudi is out a few Riyals ! Moral ? “No such thing as a free dinner” ! Cheers.
-
Good job she didn’t try to take it into Saudi ! I remember seeing an entire Pakistani family, father, mother, son and daughter in law, all executed for drug smuggling. The men had their heads chopped off, the women were shot……. Cheers.

He sounds like a good running dog man; no breed blindness, willing to try different types and different dog sports. Training a saluki to win a coursing cup and a whippet to become a Racing Champion means he knows how to condition a dog and get it ready for a competition ! Long may he continue ! Cheers.

Some years back, Paul Sagar ‘phoned me and offered to place a pure saluki pup with me. I hadn’t met him then , but we had a mutual friend that put him in touch with me. He said if it was a dog, he’d have the say what bitches it may mate, and if it was a bitch, he’d have the say when and what dog it was mated with and the litter would be his ! He said he would have the final say what competitions or matches it may eventually run in ! I politely refused his offer and said any pup I take on is 100% mine, and I think he really just wanted a dog sitter ! I met him a few times

My local club, Westerhope Whippets is on FB, but I’m not. I’m sure all the clubs will be on FB . Cheers.

Top class non-ped bitch; 3/4 non-ped whippet, 1/4 greyhound. Ran and won Bend Championships at 28lb. Cheers.

Never bothered with potatoes, to labour intensive and not cost effective, but the missus asked me to grow some “new potatoes “. I had some of those potato bags so chitted and planted some First,( very) Earlies. An old lad at the allotments told me to plant the seed tatties in four inches of compost, then when the leaves show, cover with a couple of inches off fresh grass cuttings, then when the leaves show again , cover with a couple of inches of soil and keep doing this until the bag is full and I’ll get the cleanest new tatties ever ! I’ll wait and see ! Cheers.

I’l say something about the man; I posted a picture of my man cave , and he noticed and commented on something in the corner of the picture, a Persian rug i’d forgot about. He was more than just a “dog man”. He was well travelled, and intelligent . I’d had disagreements the odd time with him, but admired him. I’m the same age as Phill, so it brings into perspective our mortality …… Charts.

Very sad news, a true gentleman and dare I say it, an icon of our sport. Our paths crossed infrequently in this country and I’m sure we tred some of the same paths in our sojourns to the Middle East. My condolences to his family and friends….. Charts.

What IS embarrassing is the fact we had to sell two of our best young players to comply with PSR rules , and haven’t bought a first team player over the last three transfer periods. Newcastle have no advantage over any other Premier team in what they can spend and are, in fact , way behind the likes of Chelsea, City, Man U, Liverpool and Spurs in their ability to spend big, because of FFP and PSR. Ive had the embarrassment of watching a team with huge support and a proud, albeit ancient, history, being used a a cash cow by a succession of owners . So I feel no embarrassment now th

There’s only a few local hunt shows I go to , mate. Meet up with lads I’ve met over the years, have a yarn and moan about the judges and the dogs that look like they’ve never seen a days work in their lives ! LOL ! That bitch is bred from a deehound sire and a greyhound bitch Gerrard sent over from Ireland, sired by the coursing champion Mafi Magic. She’s fast enough to do her job, keeps me entertained! Cheers.

Fond memories of the Gower and the Mumbles. Went for a pals wedding. Me and the missus sitting looking out over Swansea Bay eating fish and chips and drinking a bottle of wine. If the weather there is as nice as it is here you’ll have a grand day ! Cheers.

Yeah, them deerhounds prancing around the ring ! Bloody posers, should be banned from having a dog ! PMSL ! Cheers.
