Pit villages used to hold regular caged bird shows and sales, probably something to do with miners taking canaries down the pit to detect gases. Now in the many pit villages around here there’s only one still doing it and it’s dwindling, just a few old pit men and enthusiasts like me in attendance. £1 entrance , as much free tea, coffee and biscuits as you want and an hour or two great craic with old timers from a different era. Cheers.

We had Newcastle Diamonds speedway and the greyhounds at Brough Park. It was the golden age of speedway, Ivan Mauger, probably the greatest ever, now the speedway is gone, how long before the dogs follow suit ? Cheers.

I wasn’t talking about finding the kill . I meant when the quarry is gone away. Do you want a dog to follow up on scent like a hound or to know when the quarry is lost and come back to hand ? These days you can’t have a dog running all over the countryside for ages. Maybe before the ban on permission that might be acceptable,( but never for me). Yes, follow up into cover or woods but within reason ….there’s plenty game out there, no need for a running dog chasing a scent for ages like a foxhound or beagle. Cheers.

Interesting how a dog works I like a dog to range around 30-50 yards from me when working a field. This bitch I’ve got now has only just started doing that to my requirements. Its when they lose the quarry when the fun begins. This bitch isn’t the keenest at crashing into cover, and when she loses sight of her quarry comes back to hand. The deer x I had previous had no problem with cover or woods, but was never away long enough for me to worry. The beddy type would do cover like a spaniel or terrier and follow up quarry on scent and could be away ages, so I’d jus

Ballyreagan Bob still holds the track record at my local greyhound track ; 41:15 seconds for 670 metres. Cheers.

22/23” and around 40lb. (Fast and agile, as my mate Ray would say) LOL ! Cheers.

My brother has just gave up pigeon racing, he’s just going to keep a few tumblers and high flyers. There used to be two NGRC greyhound tracks in Newcastle, now there is just one. There was about six flapping tracks in the area , now just one. Shame these working mens sports are dying out. Cheers.

Far more popular, mate. Dozens of tracks and clubs in the area. Over 100 dogs at most clubs. There were five tracks within walking distance of my house, now there is only one with maybe 20 - 30 dogs. Cheers.

A non-ped whippet I had early 70’s, his grand dam was whippet x collie/greyhound .Very fast, won races and killed hares. Sadly shot dead by a keeper while coursing a hare; Cheers.

Frost back again this morning…..guess the cabbages stay in the greenhouse a bit longer ! Cheers.
-
Just west of Newcastle. Two days ago it was -4 and heavy frost. Today it was 13 and not a sign of the frost. If it stays like this for the next couple of days I might move the spring cabbages out of the greenhouse and into a sheltered spot outside. But as I said, the weather could easily change again. Cheers.

Labour were trying to rush it through before Trump gets in next week, but it looks like the Mauritians got greedy and wanted the £9 billion up front instead of £900 million per year and also wanted to reduce the proposed lease on Diego Garcia from 99 years to 55. I simply can’t understand why we should hand over British Sovereign Territory to a country that has no historical claim to them AND pay billions ???? Anyhow, it looks like something going on behind the scenes and Trump Isn’t happy ! Cheers.

It’s like a spring day here, sunshine and blue skies, 13 degrees. A pal has just shown me a picture he took this morning of a pair of foxes tied. Hens are starting to lay, but not counting any chicks just yet, plenty time for the weather to turn again. Cheers.

You god damn pussies; a sexual tyrannosaurus like me could have kept her going for 12 hours single handed ! (in my dreams, LOL !). Cheers.

An essential ingredient in a rabbit stew or a game pie. A sort of turnip that tastes like celery. Cheers.

How’s that for a prize celeriac ? Cheers.

Ace Of Spades Dragline Bucket (not Big Geordie) in Stobswood - Fabulous North FABULOUSNORTH.COM The scoop bucket used from the now dismantled Ace Of Spades dragline excavator. I know the area well. Lots of good running dogs from around there, Lurchers and Whippets. I well remember all the whippet racing tracks back in the 60’s and 70’s. Cheers.

Absolutely true ! Ive had running dogs a long time and still get that excitement when my latest dog makes its first catch as I did when my first dog did ! Cheers.

Someone will be trawling through 700 pages right now ! LOL ! Cheers.

Question should be “why would over 1,000 men risk getting an std or aids ?”. Cheers.

Like most young people, I didn’t think about or plan for my future. Due to being in the right place or at the right time, lucky breaks, coincidence, having bosses that saw something in me, working hard and studying hard, fate allowed me to go places, do things, see things that I may never have done. I’ve had tremendous “ups” and catastrophic “downs” , but I’m a stoic and a bit of a fatalist and I’m still here very fit and healthy for my age and quite contented with my life. My only slight worry is that I may not be around long enough to impart my knowledge and experience on to m

When you smile indulgently at someone who is talking utter shite, and not tell them to “shut the f**k up you idiot……”. Cheers.

Be interesting to see what sentence these two get. They’ve been arrested “ on suspicion of criminal damage” but not charged as yet. Im, sadly, expecting a community order or suspended sentence. I personally think desecrating a grave, inside a church is way, way above spraying paint on Barclays Bank windows or disrupting traffic. I honestly can’t comprehend how anyone could think this was a right thing to do. They kind of remind me of all those zealots who were persuaded to drink the Kool Aid in the Jonestown massacre. Cheers.

Retired school teaching assistants apparently. I dread to think what they were teaching the children. Cheers.
