I’ve been reading up, (again), about “The Great Game”; the political and military manoeuvring between Russia and the UK in the 19th century. Russia was afraid that Britain was going to invade the Central Asian Khanates to secure a trade route from India to Europe, and Britain was worried about Russia invading British India. The French were encouraging Russia and supplying them. The Persians , (Iran), we’re worried the Russians would invade Persia on their way to India, so the British guaranteed they would help Persia in any war with Russia . All this lead to the Crimean War

Yeah I read that, but has there been an official announcement ? Ive been out lamping and not long in, I’ve just switched on the news but they aren’t mentioning it. At lunchtime they said Zelensky asked Blinken and Lammy to allow the missiles to be used but they didn’t give him an answer. Cheers.

Have the US and the UK said they will allow their missiles to be used against Russia? Is it breaking news? As of the latest meeting between Lammy and Blinken they didn’t mention it. Cheers.

I don’t know the answer, but a start would be not to vote for the LibLabCon Uniparty. Would Reform UK do a better job ? Again, I don’t know, but they could hardly do a worse job than the legacy parties who now think they have a god given right to rule. If you can’t vote for Reform, then vote for an independent who’s views most align with yours. If nothing else, vote for The Monster Raving Loony Party , if only to show your disgust with the legacy parties ! Cheers.

Hinnie, I’m sure , is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey, whereas mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. It’s also a type of fried oatcake, but still used as a term of affection. Gallowa is a local term for a horse, as in “ that’s a canny gallowa ! “ Cheers.

Starmer was asked this morning if he would impose the inheritance tax on farms and family businesses; he refused to answer. A three generation farmer was interviewed and said farmers are asset rich but cash poor and if inheritance tax is put on farms his son would have to sell up and the big buyers of farmland are multi national companies who leave the land to “wilding “ and use it as “carbon offsetting “ for their businesses. I was sitting in my office on Jeddah Airport and my son rang me from his office in the British Consulate in Saudi and said “ dad have you got the tv on ?” I said “no, what’s happening?” He said “ they are bombing America, we are on total lock down, but ok, take care”. I turned on the tv and my office rapidly filled up with all nationalities; British, American , Saudi, Egyptian, Pakistani, Philipino, Thai, all sorts. All just staring at the screen and strangely quiet. Im old enough to remember when Churchill died, when JFK was assassinated and 9-11. Momentous occasions.

My younger brother, now retired, spent his entire working life with the local council. Starting as an apprentice painter and decorator, finishing as Health & Safety Manager. That’s on top of the “normal” overseas aid; it’s for eco projects in Africa. Why not use it for eco projects here , like loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, updated boilers and radiation’s etc for the people who will lose the winter heating allowance ? It stinks …. Cheers.

I emailed my Labour MP asking a very simple question; “ how do you intend to vote in the upcoming debate on the removal of the pensioners winter fuel allowance ? “. She didn’t afford me the courtesy of a personal reply. My nieces in New Zealand were taught Japanese at school . I asked why and they said it was the best language to learn if you wanted a good job. My grandson is still learning Japanese but how difficult must it be to learn four languages; English, Arabic , Japanese and French especially when two of them have completely different scripts to the other two, and one of them writes from right to left ? I loved taking exams and courses and still have an insatiable thirst for knowledge so I guess he takes after his old granda ! Cheers.

Hope your French is up to scratch ! My grandson called us the other day and, although he is fluent in English and Arabic, insisted in talking to us in French ! My French is decidedly pidgin but he is being taught French at his new school and wanted to impress me, not bad for a nine year old ! Cheers.

Missus was making a Thai green curry so I brought a few fresh ingredients from the allotment; Onions, spring onions, sugar snaps and Chang Rai chilli’s; Prawns, Thai green paste and coconut milk; As good as I’ve had, even in Thailand ! Cheers.

On a far smaller scale, when I lived in Saudi a mate who was leaving asked me to sell his washing machine for him, it was one of those big yank GE things. He only wanted sr300, about £50, an absolute bargain. Anyway, the first person to view it was a Pakistani woman; she asked if I would take sr200 for it; I said no, I want sr400 for it. Sorry mate, my mistake, but the same advice applies to Attendance Allowance. Speak to Age UK and they will do a benefit check for you and if you qualify they will arrange for the relevant government department to do the application on the ‘phone. It takes about 20-30 minutes and they will make a decision then and there. Some years ago when the job centres were closing down and going on line, I did three month pro bono work teaching claimants how to create a c.v. and an email address and write things like covering letters. I was both amazed and saddened at how many people were missing
