  1. I’ve seen Saudi and Emirati dogs with cropped ears. It’s mainly the Bedouins that do it, so it may be more of a traditional thing. Parts of the Iranian plateau get very cold ,but that’s at high altitudes , but in general , most of the Middle East doesn’t get below zero very often , it may do occasionally, but not to a point where frost bite would be a concern. If that were the case, why don’t the Afghans and other central Asian countries where it gets very cold crop their dogs ears ? No, I think there’s another explanation; Fens theory about the thorn bushes sounds plausible. Ch
  2. When we’re talking about Salukis I’d assume we are talking about ‘hot” deserts like the Middle East, and , in my experience, it never gets that cold. Yes , in parts of Iran, Iraq, Isreal it can get below zero , but the Arabian peninsula, well I’ve never seen or heard of it getting that cold. People may not realise but there’s “cold” deserts, like the Arctic and other very cold places, anywhere with a rainfall of less than a certain amount is classified as a “desert”. But for this discussion on Arabs cropping Salukis ears I’m assuming “hot” deserts. Running dog derivatives, such
  3. my missus, North of the Arctic Circle, -23 degrees. Cheers.
  4. That’s interesting as I’ve seen the thorn bushes in the desert and they are savage ! I don’t know why they do it, spaniels have big ears and work brambles , etc, granted our thorn bushes arent like the desert ones , but we don’t crop spaniels ears ! Who knows ? I’ll be going out there again , I’ll try and get more information. Cheers.
  5. I’ve never found out why the Bedouins cut the ears of Salukis, I’ve asked and got different answers; some say their feet catch the ears when coursing hares , others say it to prevent injury when on jackals or foxes. Cheers.
  6. Don’t think so , but I’ve heard people say there is. Maybe an expert on here will know ? Cheers.
  7. Henna, I doubt it but the Bedouin think it cools the blood, but there’s no proof of that . Cheers.
  8. Isn’t it just common sense ? Soak the foot in warm soapy water to soften and loosen the dirt, then brush it away with a soft brush ! Were not talking about scrubbing with a stiff brush and pushing the dirt up under the cuticle ! Any decent dog man, or woman, can look at a dogs nails and spot infection and decide on the treatment, to mock anyone for using a brush is beyond stupidity. Cheers.
  9. We’re talking about cleaning the nails with a soft brush, not scrubbing the front door step ! Cheers.
  10. No mate, I’m not taking umbrage. I just think the thread got out of control. mC had just said cleaning a dogs nails with a brush can cause infection , I think the opposite, cleaning a dogs nails in warm soapy water or a dilution of some disinfectant or antiseptic with a soft tooth brush, in my mind, helps to PREVENT infection. I wonder how many lads actually wash the dogs feet, give them a brush down, check for injuries after a day or nights work ? What I DO take umbrage at is when someone talks to me like I’m an amateur or beginner. If someone has different methods to me,
  11. If it comes on top of, I’m just a passing tourist , an old man out for a walk , “haven’t a clue who these reprobates are Officer” ! LOL ! Cheers.
  12. I’m talking about sending me money for a match. I want nothing to do with it. Cheers.
  13. Leave me out of it mate, it’ll never happen ! I’ll see you when I come over, Rab is going to pre-book me into that place near the airport that your pals use. Cheers.
  14. Don and I said we use a soft toothbrush to clean the dogs nails; nothing more, nothing less. mC said he doesn’t use a brush. Fine, that’s his choice, but why make a big deal of it ? I’m sure Don, Penny and I have been around long enough to know how to clean our dogs feet. Ive been doing it for almost 60 years and never had a problem. Cheers.
  15. No, try reading what Penny said, exactly the same as me and Don….. Cheers.
  16. And a bucket of warm water. Its not rocket science, is it ? Worked for me for almost 60 years….. Cheers.
  17. I’ve allways used an old, soft toothbrush to clean the dogs nails. Never had a problem. Cheers.
  18. I don’t know mate , I just take my passport with me in case. Cheers.
  19. I’ve got one mate ; What do you think ? Cheers.
  20. Theoretically, no. The government says you just need photo ID, but some of the airlines insist it must be a passport ! That’s for Northern Ireland, part of the UK. but weirdly when I went to the Republic of Ireland , a foreign country, I was never asked to show my passport ! Cheers.
  21. Depends what time of day you fly and what day. As little as £19 one way if you fly very early morning , mid week. I was looking at going on a Thursday and coming back Tuesday for £45 round trip. Cheers.
  22. No mate, I took a beddy type and a first x deer/grey last time. Im hoping to be doing a lot of hunting this time that my current bitch isn’t really suitable for. Plus it’s far easier, quicker and cheaper for me to fly than to drive and get the ferry with a dog in tow. Cheers.
  23. I’m going in the opposite direction mate ! Im flying from Newcastle to Belfast , my pal is pre - booking the B&B, and I’ll be having a run out with Gunter and a few days out with my pals. Ive ran hares all over the Yorkshire area, and I’ve ran Southern Ireland, so now it’s a chance to do some hunting in the north. Cheers.
