  1. Hound punched it out to us. He did a good job. Hounds been doin alright overall. Caught half a dozen or so with their help since we got them back.
  2. I can see how the deer blood with the whip blood to a greyhound type would be very handy on them. Big dogs just dont have the ability to cut though like a proper jackrabbit dog. At lest mine dont.
  3. Do you think he could handle one of these (if he had some backup)....trying to get an understanding if the beddy or wheaton grey crosses can handle the odd coyote if they had some slower backup I'm quite confused why you would want anything slower. If you think that slow means kill then you have alot to learn. Speed kills, slow fights and fighting a coyote will just get you a dog that is gonna quit you after about 5 to 10 coyotes. Slower than a 1/2 cross lurcher and the dog wont even be there at the kill so what would it matter. Most half cross lurchers would have no idea where a g
  4. In a roundabout way, this is kinda what we run on coyotes over here. I would not suggest them for serious jackrabbit work so I would say its not a good idea. Just an opinion though.
  5. Just keep lookin and you'll find some.
  6. There are all kinds of different "staghounds" or american running dogs. There are coyote dogs, fox dogs, jackrabbit dogs, and cotton tail dogs. Just go to a guy that runs nothin but rabbits if thats what you want. My stags catch rabbits easy but they eat em way before I could ever get to em.
  7. Dan ,no greyhounds in the uk are selected to kill, and they only run a couple of bends on a track. That was my point exactly. As a breeder of dogs that catch and kill shit I would never select for a dog that was not bred for this very same reason but as a breeder of dogs that catch and kill shit, I will however try and keep my dogs as fast as possible at all times while cullin any of them that dont make the grade at the catchin and killin part.
  8. If you are not planning on running coyote then I would go with a bull x stag. If you are planning on running coyote, you better stick to the staghound blood. An 1/8th bulldog wont hurt ya though. A half cross bullstag is the ultimate though for having fun with I would think.
  9. Obviously speed,or a modicum of it is needed in a dogs makeup, but, if it was the be and end all, breeders would have sought out sprint greyhounds ,would they not? The problem with this rational is that "sprint greyhounds" have not been selected to catch and kill shit. Only to run in a straight line. So, to answer your question, no breeders would not select them dogs. Not arguin just showin you the flaw in that rational.
  10. So ,it's a question of getting your dogs on terms and ,hoping they" reel them in "with their superior speed? I would love to see one of these courses. Yes, thats exactly what the game is. A coyote is not much faster than a fox really but they run completely different and their stamina is unreal. I have seen boys run em with sleds for miles and them sumbitches just keep on truckin. They run different than a fox also and you cant get a good "slip" on them. A fox is amazing at cuttin and slashin but a coyote wont do that really. They are way way out there usually and it just require
  11. Mostly was just huntin barns and cribs and junk and brush piles. It wasnt anywhere near traditional terrier hunting. I dont care for the diggin stuff, not cause I'm lazy just cause its inefficient here in my opinion. Stabba, I got your pearl necklace locked and loaded ready for you when you lose the last on I gave ya. HAHA!
  12. inan, a coyote has way too much stay to try and play that game with him. You will not find a dog that can stay with one, not a good one anyhow, he has to be overhauled and killed.
  13. Ya, our coyote courses are between 30 seconds and 2 minutes.
  14. to see them on the fens, doing 2-3 minute courses, (which is actualy a long time for a course), is like watching paint dry I feel the exact same way. I am not knockin them. If thats what you like then so be it but I want it fast as can be.
  15. please correct me if im wrong ,so your saying that a dog must be born with the know how from day one that it must not run flat out on game ,but learn to pace its self ,what a load of nonsens , I dont think that is what he really meant. I think he meant they were born with the ability to learn how to run clever.
  16. I would be very interested in seeing alot more of these type of dogs on here. I just dont think you can go wrong, even a splash of bulldog couldnt hurt in the mix but not much.
  17. Ya, he is much rougher than the bitches. No bitch will hang with a rough male dog. Maybe 1 in a 1000 but that not realistic. The males just bring so much more to the table. As far as speed though, he was much much faster at one time but he isnt any more. He is crippled now but still on a dead straight away on easy runnin, he can fly. Bitches overall can usually hang in the speed department. And sometimes will be the fastest dogs out. Stitch was just a freak of nature before he got hurt.
  18. The yella dog is my male dog I call Stitch. I got him from a friend last spring. Yes, he is a coyote hound. Them coons there will average maybe $10. The fur prices aint what they were 30 or 40 years ago.
  19. Me holdin him on the front porch so Abby can take another pic of her hero. LOL! I am though you know. HAHA!
  20. Went out tonight for a walk after work. It was already gettin dark by the time I got to the first mile I was gonna walk but oh well. I took off but forgot to put my coon light on but Cotton still managed to catch a rabbit that tried to put the moves on the dogs by running under a concrete bridge and across a bunch of big rocks. I have no idea how she did it so dont ask but she caught it. Then I thought I'd go coon huntin for awhile with them cause they are death on coons at night if there is one out and about. Went to a big timber and walked it down a mile and circled back through it and along
  21. Thats all I was tryin to say. I dont know who asked it but I dont lamp at all really, not seriously anyhow. I'm a daytime hunter 99% of the time. then dan, that is why a dog with to much speed in the dark is a acident waiting to happen ,but in the day it can see what is what and i would agree with you about having a lot more speed ,but it would also have to have stamina to go with it ,as you would know . Yes, I have taken 6 coyotes in one day with my set so I'd say they have plenty of both speed and stamina and definatley are sound cause we run on some raw ground. Its hard fo
