Whippets, thickets and working dog classes
OldPhil replied to Luckee legs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Facts are,....If you seriously work a genuine hunting/mouching style whippet,...it will inevitably hit a few, bits and pieces.... Back in the day,...I was privileged to own, breed and work,.. quite a few of these diminutive Rabbiters,.,.. I also Judged hundreds at the various country shows that were so much in vogue, at that time. Some of them were so scarred up , that their svelte, silky coats resembled a road map of the British Isles.... Disregarding the obvious attributes of physique and correct conformation,....I never took ANY notice of marks gained through their- 86 replies

We would all prefer a dog that 'tries' for everything and anything,...we don't wanna be wasting our time with a canine pal that ain't taking the hunting game seriously,...but,.. truth is,.. most dogs,.. not all, but the vast majority, of running dogs,. .will eventually throw in the towel,. .if worked regularly enough... .Everything and everybody ,.. can be forced to quit,..in the end

At our age,...every day is a bonus,...I wish that we could go back,...alas,. we can't....

Good words Boys.... Facts are,..."When they really get good,...unfortunately,...they get old"

You are going to miss the old Jukel when he goes Brother.... We always work on the same principle with our own rabbit dawgs,....Swimming and Retrieving are both useful disciplines , and when combined, they open up a myriad of opportunities to exercise a lurcher , both physically and mentally.... I'm not much of a swimmer myself so I always walk out backwards into the deep water, with a puppy on a short lead...some have a bit of a panic,...but, if you keep calm and collected yourself, they soon relax and start to swim... .Once they are confident , the sky is the limit and more so i

That looks to be a real nice youngster,...I wish you great sport and good times

Yes , I've heard that Nowadays, I mainly use my old' un's for flushing quarry to the guns,.. or following up wounded game.. These smaller type lurchers seem to work well in dense woodland, and they can get into places fairly easy..

I would agree,.. and if you search around for the right types, they can be ideal for the rabbiting job.

In my opinion,...most pastoral F1 Hybrids can usually be improved upon....

Greyhound x Cur is an easy hybrid to produce,...both parties are readily available and not hard to find... Facts are,.. such a traditional mouching style lurcher, is not at the top of every man's list,...and as such, they are not universally popular. When a genuine litter is produced,.. the resulting pups are not always advertised on the open market, and they frequently get quickly and quietly gifted ,..to fellow enthusiasts... Obviously the Sire's and Dams are not generally famous or even particularly well known,. but they are none the worse for that...

We have used this guy several times... Foolishly,...he got himself involved in a bad old thing,... and was duly punished for it.... Personally,...I would trust him with a running dog,....he definitely knows the score....

"Right there Fred"..... Personally,...I like my rabbit dogs on a warren as soon as they have had their Jabs,....lots to learn and so many events to experience... Its a big old world out there for a young pup and the sooner he gets to learn and understand what the score is, the better. I like to keep a working dog for several years,..it is an investment and a valuable item, so its well worth putting some effort into early education. Unless a fellow is an exceptionally interesting raconteur ,.it is unlikely that a puppy is hanging on your heels due to your sparking personal

Hmm,...unless the older dog is set upon killing the youngster, as opposed to simply putting it in it's place, albeit drawing blood (most unusual) I would let nature take its course....Facts are, your dogs will have to get on and work together, so until the younger dog becomes a 'made dog' and can stand his ground,...there will inevitably be a hierarchy twixt the two of them... This is perfectly natural,...after all, we are talking canines here, not human siblings. I would not place too much faith in getting a dog's balls cut off , to make him think differently of the pup,...he nee

Don't be too eager to consider amputation of a toe...in some cases, there is no other option, and then you have to do what is best.. However,..by the looks of your dog's toes in your post, I feel that you are hopefully a long way off yet, from making that decision. Personally,.. for the future,....I would try to keep your Whippet's nails much, much shorter... Talk to a Running Dog Vet ,....there isn't much to be done with sprung toes other than loads of steady walking, and definitely no running for 6 weeks. I used to have loads of foot and wrist problems with my fast, whi

Personally,...I would always seek out a genuine Running Dog Vet.... They are out there,...but you might have to travel in order to find the right man... .. Such experienced and knowledgeable folk really do know the score with Foot and Toe injuries,.... The main thing with Collateral Ligament Damage is to give it TIME.....

Erudite and accurate observations from a hunter who has actually done the job Back in the late 1970's/1980's we bred a few larger type lurchers,...mostly from Deerhound x Greyhound hybrids, and further enhanced the mix with the genes of our local Sheepdogs . We fancied hitting the massive herds of Fallow and Sika that inhabited much of Hampshire and Dorset.... In hindsight, the inclusion of Bull blood or Desert dog would have been an improvement, alas,. .none of these superlative canines were readily available at that time. Correspondingly, we just used what we had.

Looking for Bedlington Whippet breeders
OldPhil replied to Oscar Bellville's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The Bedlington Terrier influence can be amazingly strong.
