  1. It's all down to personal choice. Any dog can be a stock killer if not trained and in the wrong hands. My dogs are around livestock, poultry and cats all day with no problems, why? because I stock broke them like any other dog. As I already mentioned, i didn't purposefully buy Shepherds to hunt with but when out they display good instincts and a good nose. However the question arose would they be a usefull baseline for a lurcher They have an excellent nose, good feet, coat, good mouth, stamina and again when using EUROPEAN WORKING LINES they have good physical/mental attributes. Again i
  2. I'll concede you are a better shot However with regards to the bulls bottom I don't want to mention too much with your court case iminent :11: :11: :11:

  6. Glad your bitch is working well. Can be devestating when a good working dog is out with injury ( I know). 10 rabbits, 10 runs, can't ask for any more
  7. Hi Mick, I'll try and get some up by next weekend, trying to master the digital camera. I suppose I could read the instructions but that would be admitting defeat :11: My dogs don't resemble the mutant in CharlieC's photo, thank god
  8. Interesting thread, but i would like to add there are German Shepherds and there are German Shepherds. The comments about the dogs aggressive temperament and conformation can clearly be seen in some dogs in this country. 99% of Shepherd in this country are bred for show or pets. European Shepherds are a totally different kettle of fish, they are bred for WORK. I have two such dogs bred from Belgian inports, one a youngster and a six year old male. The male has been worked in various competitions and is both physically and mentally sound. The dog is trained for competition obedience, has
  9. Thanks for the advice, been driving around trying to get a decent noise and its getting better, although you do get funny looks at the traffic lights
  10. Do any of you guys use the Acme predator call. I tried one today and it reminded me of Sootys mate Sweep. First thoughts were the only thing that could be called in would be Matthew Corbett. :11:
  11. Just watched a programme on National Geographic about a supposed 1,000lb, 12 ft long boar shot in America. It also mentioned the feral population of wild boar in southern England and Wales and wondered if anyone had ever come across them when out working the dogs?
  12. Doubt it I once managed three baby shams and a pint of snakebite without being sick  :11:
  13. Last ones seem to be leaving in Lincolnshire, Powerwashed the kennel and run after Housemartins have deposited their diet over the concrete
  14. I enjoyed Sean Frain's books on the Patterdale Terrier and Rat Hunting. I think you are being very unfair on his artistic ability, rumour is that all drawings for the book were subcontracted to Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. My favourite is the terrier carrying the rat in the Rat hunting book. I am currently trying to track down the breeder of these terriers which appear to have no neck, stumpy and deformed legs :11: :11: :11:
  15. Don't think i need to know what you do to a pig :11:
  16. Cheers Whippet, Downloaded the form. No prizes for guessing what santas bringing this christmas.
  17. Can someone give me some advice on buying a shotgun. Apart from pottering about with air rifles as a kid and shooting 9mm handguns at a club I have very little experence shooting as I prefer to see dogs working. However I have just got some shooting access for rabbit, crow and pigeon and rather than look a gift horse in the mouth and was hoping somebody could help with explaining how to apply for a license and any good websites to look at "cheap" guns. Wolud you suggest a twelve bore or 410?
  18. Good luck Moll. My dog damaged his cruciate ligament jumping in February. Been to the vets several times who told me to give loads of rest before looking at surgery and looking back I wish I had asked for a second opinion. It took three months before I could let him run loose and at the moment (fingers crossed) he can run ok but I haven't dared jump him and he seems to kick out with his damaged leg.
  19. I've used infa-red lamps on dogs, ferrets and a variety of other animals. Think they are good, especially if you are kenneling your dog directly after working in winter.

  22. Good work Mustelid, I also teach further education at an old agricultral college and have never hidden my opinions and introduced the hunting debate many times in the past to try and enlighten the students. With a few exceptions most students are very anti hunting along with most staff. Yet when exercising their dogs it's ok to chase rabbits as they aren't hunting???? :realmad:
