Don’t over complicate things, she’s only young so just wants a good healthy mixed diet of meat, bone, fat etc. Protein isn’t the be all and end all too much is just as bad as not enough. You don’t need to build muscle either just feed her well & walk her plenty she’ll find her own shape.

If you know the parents & saw them work that’s a good starting point. But if it’s bred by someone you know i suppose that’s different to seeing an advert and ringing up a stranger. So many lies told about dogs you can almost guarantee buying a pup off a stranger you won’t get the full truth.
-
I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that, buying a lurcher is a minefield, people think the grass is always greener but if you have a decent bitch that you like, breeding her will almost always be better than buying a pup that’s for sale to the general public. Always starts a big argument the breeding, buying, selling topic but personally I’d never buy an advertised lurcher pup again in my life.
-
If you’re passionate about dogs why would you see it as such a hassle? It’s a bit of hard work if you do it properly but it shouldn’t feel like a chore from a good bitch, should be excited for the pups not moaning about cleaning up the shit or feeding them.
-
Surely if their dogs were of such a high standard, they’d breed them and not buy in. If someone’s letting their own bitch lie in the kennel, and buying a pup from someone else I’d reckon the bitch can’t be all shes made out to be.

We used to lamp the local golf course when I first started with lurchers, rabbits flew across those fairways didn’t catch very many at all, 3 rabbits was considered a top class night ? Heard a lot of horror stories about dogs suffering terrible injuries on golf courses but for the amount we ran those rabbits I never saw one dog pick up an injury. Wouldn’t do it now but was a good bit of fun at the time before any of us could drive.
-
Worst thing in the world an injury prone dog tbh, had them myself doesn’t matter how good they run it they’re laid up regularly they’re better off in a pet home
-
Some deerhound hybrids have been used for that job though, to what extent I don’t really know I’ve seen a couple they were ok but didn’t make me want to own one, wouldn’t mind a bit of deer/grey in a line of saluki lurchers though, just finding a decent one. I’d rather have a deer/grey than some of the crosses I’ve heard people describe as good deer dogs though
-
They are dying out, it’s a shame that there’s not many people using them for the job they were bred for, to be honest there’s not a lot of people flat out at that job at all, a lot catch the odd bit here and there but not many people require a proper deer dog

Loads of men up to those sort of tricks
-
I actually didn’t mean you ?
-
If you’re happy with your dog that’s all that matters, easy to get caught up in numbers but chasing them can ruin your season, and most of the time the people you’re competing with are lying anyway so don’t worry about it ?
-
Best way to learn just do a bit of research online, pick a spot, go & enjoy it. The more runs you find for the young dog the better it’ll be. Best of luck with it.

Still summer here, 80% of fields still long, had a bit of rain but temps are too high could easy kill a dog, seasons definitely changing can barely get anything done before October these days.
-
Temps are rising again next week I’d be careful running anything other than rabbits, not a dig at you just a genuine comment people see 1 good night and get carried away the seasons not here yet, could end up with a very poorly dog or worse.
-
Just whenever the grounds soft and more importantly the temperature drops, people see rain & rush out but high temperature can finish a dog just as easy as hard ground. Ive got a young dog here 17 months showed him a bit back end of last season but he won’t be doing much till October, odd night rabbiting in September but nothing serious. If you’re out alot it’s a long winter for a dog last thing they need is overcooked when it’s still basically summer.
-
I don’t go out with dogs in April personally, but each to their own whatever suits you. That'll do spot on, if that falls through down south isn’t an issue either. Get my number off your mate who’s told you about me & give me a ring nearer the time. I’m not taking the piss either I genuinely do know someone that’s been out with you but I’ve been sworn to secrecy.
-
I’m 26, never been caught lying about dogs can promise you that. I know seasons as well you won’t educate me on deer but those are rifle seasons, which we don’t work by or we’d be out all summer, well I suppose you pretty much are so that makes sense ?. Genuine offer you know where I live so come up winter time for a run, or I’ll meet you down south I’m not fussy. I like a laugh on these sites but if you think I’m a liar about dogs I’ll meet you for a run no problem and you can judge for yourself sound fair enough?
-
Quite a few people in dogs think I’m a proper prick but that’s down to me being honest, which I’ve realised most dog men hate with a passion ? I’m alright with that though I only go out with a couple of lads and we get a fair amount done so I don’t worry about other dog men. And you’re wrong on that one I do know someone that’s been out with you, I know that you’ve always been an insufferable know it all, I know you won’t poach with your dogs, I know you were killing deer in April, so f**k off back to your sheep and leave the lurchers to the lads that have a proper go at it ?
-
f**k off ?
-
I know a bit, i do know boys that know you as well so you’re act of being a knowledgeable experienced dog man isn’t fooling anyone
-
Theres a self admitted grass actually posting on this thread & I don’t think you’re to be trusted either so I’ll pass on that question
-
Young dog & puppy I’ve got here never cost me a penny, the lads getting a cocker pup gifted back next summer, only way to be
-
You make a good point, but make no mistake a lot of the idiots in this sport are driven by greed, they’re fame and money hungry that’s the reason for the facebook groups, coursing dvds etc, all about showing off, making a name for themselves and making money.

I’d rather be a peddler than a grass.
