  1. I had one on loan for a winter 4 or 5 years ago, keeper mate sent me it down to run when I only had a pup on. It was painful slow, couldn’t even catch white hares. It didn’t last much longer when it went back up to him he’d had enough of it
  2. Fair play sandy you like what you like, just the way I see it, 1 dog & 1 hare is the way to see how good a dog is, I’m not a fan of coursing DVD’s of any kind but if you watch the chalky & the boys ones there’s a red bitch called tilly, she stands out a mile for me. She’s got gears, wind, heart & a running brain to put it all together. I’ve never seen a dog in any Spanish or Middle Eastern video, or any other country for that matter, that would even be fit to sit in the same car as that bitch. Just my opinion we’re all different, it’s what makes things interesting.
  3. I don’t like dogs that turn every run in to a war, there’s no need for it, but I think for a dog to make a good hare killer it needs to be able to read the course, they look fast them galgos but they turn wide and overshoot on most turns, I like to see a fast dog but it’s even better to see a dog glued to the back of a hare, I think that’s how most hares lose their heads if they feel they can’t shake the dog off their tail.
  4. Got to agree, those videos compared to good dogs in this country highlight the difference between coursing a hare and chasing one
  5. Suppose it’s one of those things, it’s all subjective because we’re just watching videos, unless decent dogs from here went over there, we’ll never really be able to compare
  6. Think there’s a big difference in the dogs in the videos as well sandy, you never see any dogs in those foreign videos working a hare, boxing it away from a dyke, hedge etc. They seem to just run up their arse. The dogs in this country have adapted to work a hare not just chase after it, this maybe gives the impression that the hares over here aren’t as fast, but it could be that they’re not just in a flat out sprint all the way through the course like the ones in those videos are
  7. Some nice land over there, dogs feet must be tough looks bone dry. Think 3 or 4 dogs on a hare is ridiculous mind you if people did that in this country they’d get slated.
  8. If you’ve got the time and patience to do it, you won’t beat the old fashioned method, brown bread, pasta, meat, tripe, veg etc. Kibbles definitely easier especially if you’ve got a few dogs just a scoop in to a bag, add a bit of meat and you’re done, but you can’t knock the old school feeding style IMO
  9. I don’t mean flat as in can’t bend anything, what I mean is when you trot them for 6 weeks, that first trip out they’re a far cry away from their best, fast forward to mid-late november they look a different dog
  10. I’ve known a hound pack to get fed on fallen sheep, green tripe and the odd bag of budget biscuit & they were worked harder than most lurchers I’ve seen, but I still put 100% in to mine, if you want 100% back from them I think it’s only fair
  11. I think your smaller whippet based lurchers seem to get to a good level of fitness quicker, maybe I’m wrong though I can’t say for sure
  12. You hear a lot of people saying their dogs get ran 4/5 nights a week, but they’re classing a quick drive round the local back roads running a hare or 2 as a night out. If you’re doing a good amount of travelling, 2 hard days/nights a week is a lot for a dog if you’re giving them plenty runs when you go. It might not seem a lot 2 days out of 7 but when you do it every week from September to March it’s a lot of running, and if your dogs decent you’ll put a lot of game away. If the “I’m out every night” guys really did what they said they did, they’d overload all the local gamedeal
  13. I’m not on about the speed of the dog, what I meant was all the saluki blooded dogs I’ve had need about 6 weeks of actual running before you see them start to get fit, and I think as they get fitter they improve drastically, get a lot sharper. Like you couldn’t trot them for 6 weeks and they’d run at their best first few times out, I think they need a good few weeks of actual running before you see what they’re about
  14. If you’re adding meat then 18% is fine to be honest, people get too hung up on protein, it’s important but only when the dog needs it, too much protein all the time is just as bad for a dog as not enough. If you’re running twice a week better sticking to a mid level protein diet & just giving bigger portions & extra meat for a day or 2 after the dogs ran.
  15. They’ve got a natural running brain, and no other type comes close in terms of wind, they can have a hard run & 5 minutes later they’re ready to go again. Im not intentionally negative about them, I’m just honest about dogs I’m not kennel blind like most seem to be.
  16. Why did you go away from it?
  17. To be fair I’ve noticed the opposite with the saluki based dogs I’ve had, you can trot & gallop them for 6-8 weeks pre season but when you start running them they still look half flat, takes a fair bit of running to sharpen them up.
  18. Anyone used Millie’s wolfheart peak performance, 30% fat content looks good for winter with a good protein content as well only 23%
  19. How did you rate them? Like the look of them, bottom one has as good a set of feet as you’d ever see on a dog
  20. Replace the horse with a 4x4, the gazelle with a fallow buck or red stag & the dogs with big bull crosses, it happens here all the time
  21. I noticed that on a lot of the raw feeding groups, most dogs look well fed on just meat if they’re not getting any work, how much high quality nutrition does a dog need to hold condition when all it gets is a quick walk round the park every day. Something around 20-24% protein with a high fat & good vitamin content is spot on to mix with a pound of beef or chicken, with some liquids & veg.
  22. Won’t go far wrong with a mix of both, I think they generally look better when they’re getting meat as well. Dont think one or the other is the answer because feeding purely a BARF diet I’ve noticed they struggle to hold weight when they’re being worked hard
  23. That’s what it comes down to though, high percentage now aren’t going to see decent runs, they’d rather kill 5 duffers than 2 top hares because the picture looks better for the Facebook groups. It’s a shame but just the way it is.
  24. Lies & egos have played a big part in ruining lurchers, you only need to watch a few of the coursing dvds to see that. Its now standard to charge £1000 a pup because it’s great grandmother won a few matches worlds gone mad but for as long as people keep paying it they’ll keep charging it
