  1. I don’t think so, I think a lurchers purpose is to run & catch game, not help provide a good days sport for toffs.
  2. The original lurcher was bred as a poachers dog to catch game for the table. Sighthounds were banned for the common man, so they had to cross them with collies etc so they didn’t look like sighthounds. The original lurcher most certainly wasn’t bred to push birds about for the lord & his friends them pick them up for him once he’d shot them.
  3. If that’s what people are in to then for them they might think it’s important, just for me I don’t see it as lurcher work. Like you’d never judge a spaniel on its ability to run hares so it’s the same the other way round, and how far do we take it, you could probably train a lurcher to be a guide dog but it’s not part of the criteria to call it an all rounder. Its hard to put in to words but I think if you’re taking a dog beating you’re using up a days energy to push pheasants to guns, if your mindset is that you want to test that dog to the max would you not be better using that energy f
  4. Day or night doesn’t make much difference, but I mean proper running whether it’s rabbits, hares, foxes, deer whatever.
  5. I don’t care how often people work their dogs whether it’s 5 times a week or once a month, what gets me is when people lie about how much they do that’s different. I agree with some of what she says but not all of it, for me beating on a shoot isn’t working a lurcher, and if you’re on a shoot a few days a week how much work can your dogs realistically get cause they need rest days as well. If I want to test a dog I’ll go out and graft it properly not spend days walking in a beating line but we’re all different
  6. A lot look down their noses at the CWD but I think they’re cracking sport, not testing but good fun none the less
  7. I don’t think the mans doubting what she says mate, I think it’s because there’s a tone to her posts that there’s nobody out there testing beddy crosses properly like she is, and this is bound to get some people’s backs up because there’ll be men out there giving beddy crosses plenty work but keep under the radar.
  8. To be fair in my experience how good a roe deer looks is totally dependant on how much open space it’s got infront of it, any dog can catch them in paddocks but I’ve seen a few supposedly decent deer dogs return sheepish when there’s 500+ yards of open space in front of it. Also just to add without being too controversial & no offence to bull cross lads, but they’re not blessed with wind, if I wanted a dog to graft away steady all night a straight bull/grey wouldn’t be my first port of call, and it’s all well & good being a heavy anchor but you’ve got to catch what you’re running
  9. A lot of sense spoken in that post it’s the same with all crosses
  10. I don’t do loads in these type of areas but it’s nice for a change
  11. Can’t beat a strong dog techniques important but you need the full package. I think big deer in places like that and on mountains is a really hard thing to get the right dog for, not strong enough they won’t hack it but too heavy they won’t catch in the first place
  12. To be fair it’s a dangerous game mixing with big deer in thick woodland. Places like that in the picture I’ve found a clever dog fares best. You’ve got big deer, clear fells, rock faces, steep drops and thick woodland. If the dogs the type to just charge in without using its brain you’ll more than likely end up with a big vet bill or worse.
  13. Caught a few in woodland but not many to be fair, and always seems to be within the first 50yds in to the wood. A lot of large forestry blocks near me some good sport up and down the rides & valley bottoms but tend to find if the deer hits them with a bit of a gap on the dog it’s usually home & dry. (Pre ban)
  14. Good condition can tell a young dog that’s been reared properly from one that hasn’t
  15. That’s a stunning young dog, strong for his age. How’s that bred?
  16. I don’t see why people get wound up about the price of pet dogs, people can charge/pay whatever they want it doesn’t matter, there’s no working gene pool to be ruined. Working dogs on the other hand should be gifted to mates & the rest placed in pet homes, that’s my take on it anyway. Nothing wring with charging a small fee for a working dog mind you if the lad breeding is genuinely too skint to do a litter properly without covering his costs, but anyone profiting off working dogs is part of the problem
  17. Its a perfect definition of irony calling them “working dog” shows. If a dogs had a proper hard season grafting you won’t see it poncing around a show ring in June ripped with muscle & not an eyelash out of place.
  18. Gone fashionable now hasn’t it the beddy x whippet, the summer time “working dog” show crowd will all be breeding them it’ll be hard to get a good one if you don’t know decent lads.
  19. He gets good numbers of rabbits ferreting with purse nets and people think this is good reason to crawl right up his arse. I’ve nothing against the man personally just an observation. Strange world.
  20. Got to be one of the strangest things in dogs, grown men hero worshiping other men.
  21. That’s some title to hold because there’s been some belters on here past and present ?
  22. Think it’s the same with all crosses. You get a minority that know the breeds capabilities & get the best from them. The kennel blind ones that think they’re the ultimate machine. The clueless ones that just ruin whatever they touch. And the money men that do more breeding and selling than they do running. If we’re honest all breeds & lines have their pros and cons, there is no ultimate lurcher, just different dogs to suit different men. Nothing worse than kennel blindness it’s an illness that so many dog men suffer from
  23. Was a nice dog temperament wise, well behaved. Was keen as well no matter how many it missed it always kept trying, but just had no gears at all.
