  1. You've told me to take a chill pill, I think you need to OD on them, you obviously want everyone to listen to you and know one else, I was an accomplished military shooter both on the range and in the weeds, and still hunt successfully using the football field method, so have a fair idea of range estimation using the mark1 eyeball, perhaps I can use the simpler methods better than you as I am obviously a lot more competant than your know it all self, I really think with your rot you are showing your inexperience in the field, show us a few hunting pics please and not the ones of rats shot with
  2. Deker your facts and figures just amaze me, you are the man. Known distance is the term given to these methods my unenlightened friend, you are a way to serious individual, if you have trouble shooting at different ranges perhaps you need a lot more practice instead of bothering yourself with whether a football field is the correct size or not, then you may be able to leave the rifle range and do some hunting, if you are concerned about a difference in 5-10 metres maybe you need to stay within the 'sterile' conditions of the range and leave the animals alone.
  3. Maybe if you weren't so aggressive in replying to posts you'd get a more polite response. Now go and find it for yourself :wankerzo4: I asked BASC and it still applies apparently But making the assumption that you're the expert in these matters and not the BASC deer department, I'll bow to your superior knowledge. Laugh my f#cking Arse Off, give up Dave, good reply, but Deker knows all things firearms, apparently and WILL argue for the sake of it simply because he obviously has way too much time on his hands.
  4. SS Peltor do have a slimline model, getting a set myself.
  5. Perhaps as a technical employee of the landholder it MAY waiver some of the regulations? I know it does here at times with the Game Council.
  6. Thanks mate, it is early in the day OK, I am sure Deker will enlighten me though. A mate of mine was away with a bloke shooting pigs on the weekend and old mate had a pair of binos with an electronic range finder built in, have you used these? The football field (GIVE OR TAKE) concept is what is known as bracketing ie how many fields could you fit between you and your target and is what I have always used, find it very effective out to 500. Pacing is basically the same I feel as it is a known distance in your mind. Cheers
  7. Deker, if I said the sky was blue you would argue its black, don't be so pradantic, I am sure you will correct the spelling for me.
  8. Tin of cat food with a few holes punched in it.
  9. The football pitch is a great method ie known distance, work out your rifles maximum effective range and go from there, basically you need to be coinfident that whatever you place the crosshairs on the bullet will strike. Not real interested in rangefinders or mildots, just more kit to f#ck you around when you should be concentrating on just shooting your target.
  10. Well mate if your first chioce is the Rem, go for it, for me, it is the preferred make. The Savage may have things the Tikka doesn't, but the workmanship and the overall finish of the Swede is far superior. I looked at the T3 and it was just too light for my liking, very hard to hold still from the shoulder, it is very hard to load the mag through the breech and I feel the 700 action is probably the best out there. Stab's was up here the other vweekend and he just told me he thought my Rem .270 was easier to shoot than my wife's BRNO .222, now that is a big rap for the user freindliness.
  11. Very sensible posts John and Jamie, I will disagree also Deker, Remington arguably make the BEST rifles full stop, working firearms for the field not the range. Logic, entry level being the cheapest, the money they are asking is extortion, the Tikka is 10 times the rifle.
  12. G'day Socks, I have a mate who breeds Wei's down here and is a pro trainer, hunts them on deer and really knows his stuff, can pass on his contact details if you like, he is always willing to help. Cheers
  13. Hey Stabs, did I tell you that bitch has been serviced? Yes mate, you wee shooting prettty well with the .270, certainly good on hares at long range hey. WILF, not real sure about the hefty dash of cuture, probably more like a culture shock.
  14. It either lays golden fecking eggs or the 2 zeroes shouldn't be there.
  15. 1. Yes they are accurate enough for pest control, but generally a bolt gun will have the accuracy edge because of the stronger action, the rifles you are looking at though will do the job quite well though. 2. Used most makes out there and most perform very well with regular cleaning, the Ruger Mini 14 while not really a military job is semi-auto and is VERY accurate and reliable, if you go for an AR-15 type try and keep away from any older military surplus ones as most are too worn out and rattly to be of much use, but as you are probably aware there are some great models out there these
  16. There are good lads giving good advice on this thread and asking questions, rightly so, be a shame if it is a wind up.
  17. As i said GG your are thinking along the right lines, you will be fine with a .308, probably stick to 150 grainers.
  18. Probably half that money in Aust. mate and it doesn't even compare to a Tikka. Really an entry level rifle.
  19. Stabs you give me one of them books.
  20. Ask Stab's mate, he will know one for sure.
  21. C'mon lads, I know there are some experienced members in this field, good question I thought.
  22. Dicehorn great post, very, very true, obviously speaking from experience. By the way mods I had this post deleted yesterday, the second time it has happened lately??
  23. Doozer I have always maintained getting pups out as early as possible with trained dogs, possibly from 6 weeks of age, this is with pigdogs though, I know a few great dog trainers and for deer they recomend at least 8 - 9 months minimum and yes the say that good basic obedience is the key.
  24. Deker I think the man is talking about a hunting rifle, not wasting time and gunpowder shooting at targets and then measuring the group, I have mountain rifles, so they are light and I have yet to have a problem getting consistent groups with them and this country is a damn site warmer that Blighty. I have lugged heavy Parker Hales around the field pre SR98 days and the extra accuracy after several rounds at 300-400 yards is marginal, at the longer ranges they do make a difference, as if you know anything about the theory of a group you will understand, being a target shooter I am sure you do,
  25. You are definitley thinking along the right lines, .308 is fine for reds, I am a .270 fan for the slightly flatter trajectory, but when it comes to deer size targets the difference on chest shots will make feck all difference. The .243 will also handle them well though with the correct bullet, there have been thousands upon thousands of reds shot over the years with .222's, if you feel comfortable with the .308 I would say great choice as it will handle the reds better.
