Whilst as a humble amateur albeit with a keen interest in doing as near a pro job as I can on any silly little jobs I do. "I'm doing no-one out of work, up here it's me or rentokill", I still like to act within the law, and also within what I feel are my own ethical guidlines. One badly snared rabbit or foul caught animal bothers me for a long time. I feel we owe it to the animals we trap to do it in the most humane and failsafe ways we can. Personally I like to keep snares and traps out of public areas and check them in the grey dark of the morning, though I appreciate this would not be possi

Well Lads there's certainly plenty of food for thought there. I for one am clearer as to what's what, and though I won't use BG's in a fenceline, I'll certainly get one or two for tunnels as I feel they might have applications where they'll be better than Fenns.

Cheers Rolfe that's great, ian.

Hi Rolfe, call me daft "ok your daft" no but what's a cubby, and would it stop a dog getting it's nose caught. ian

The same to you Ed, All the very best ian. Do you still have the 200 body grips and do you want to sell some, all I ever got for nowt was a pack of crisps from Aldi when mine were soggy.

Hi mate, you might only have one mole as they can push up a few heaps. If the traps are brand new they may take a day or two to catch. Most folks leave them in a stream or the like for a few days. What kind of traps are they. If they are the Duffus half barrel type, find the run between the last two newest heaps and take out a hole just big enough for the trap, and set it. Cover with some loose soil to exclude light, more if its frosty. If you type in the search box at the top of the page, it'll bring up all previous articles on moles. good luck ian.

he will take the piss out of the wanabe stars. how dare you lot slag a great man. he will be there when there not. Who are you refering to as "you lot". It's you who has stirred the most controversy I have ever seen since joining the site. A lot of the contributers on THL are great pros and just because EC is more in vogue doesn't necessarily make him in any way superior to anyone else on here. I have a vid of his and one of Woodga's and one or two others and they are on a par. Yes Ed will have contributions to make, but he also might learn how to snare,

When I first saw these, they look like the little metal puzzles you get in crackers, you've to see how long it takes to make a necklace with them, starting , now.

Thanks Guys it is a grey area, I suppose it'll take a misshap to get a ruling in court, though any other opinions still wellcome. ian

Hi Guys, I don't want to ruffle feathers or cause any grief, but could anyone enlighten me as to the laws regarding the placement of bodygrip traps. Some well respected pro's seem to place them in fencelines, and if this is legal then they would be a very useful addition to my armoury, "as an amateur who does little jobs locally when approached". It's just that I have deep seated misgivings about using spring traps that aren't in tunnels, ie for wandering kids, dogs, nosey parkers etc. How would I stand if I set them in a fenceline run under a fence with permission, and some kid lost their fin

a handy squirrel cage for body grips
ianrob replied to woodga's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
We don't see many over here, but when I do I'll try some. I was once going to try rooks, but when I'd plucked them I couldn't face it. In other parts of the world, they eat crows, owls, hawks, snakes and insects, "tastes like chicken". We must be spoilt here. I'll just stick to haggis, at least it's all good stuff, hearts lungs liver herbs and oatmeal, boiled in a sheeps stomach. -

Aye nice catch, simple but effective. What are they like to eat. -
The holding part is 9" and yes they do, though the loops on the top are various shapes and sizes, I measured and the holding part of the pins is more or less 9".
-
Various sizes OTC, but mostly 9"

i think i could make wires pretty easy but the wire and eyelts seemed quite expensive Geordie makes good snares as does Woodga. Once you have had a rabbit in them they are well battered, yet still catch another 7 or 8 before they're done, so as long as they are six strand and spun reasonably tightly, they're all ok PS for £60 or so you could have enough gear for a lifetime.

Few More Observations On Fence Snares
ianrob replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I thought that too RatSnatcher. Rolfe can trap more than rabbits. I could refer to recent pussycat related articles, but thought better of it. Rolfe's a machine. -

Clap trap best present this Christmas
ianrob replied to comanche's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
As I thought - that one was made for Quadtag which is what became of the legendary Gilbertson & Page company from Hertford It was sold during the 's and 90's and is a copy of the earlier produced 'Hoodie' Crow traps I am still not sure how they got away with using a 'spring trap for birds' which is a contravention of the Act which got so many other trap makers into trouble OTC Nice trap, would it have had a piece of wood as a perch fitted to the flat piece next to the magazine in the first pic, or is the plate for attaching a bait. -
Another point worth mentioning is to set them on the side the rabbits are going to, not the side they are coming from, as the snare can snag on the fence, preventing it from pulling up, probably very obvious.
