My new puppy (something you do not see here too often)
abrasivewheel replied to MagyarAgar's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I believe through the middle ages keeping a lurcher sight hound other than by noblemen required the dog to be ham strung. if owned by the commoners so as not to be able to catch the kings deer.. -
I assume it could create similar problems as what can occur in men with a undencended testicle possible cancer twisting etc . My mate had to have his removed due to blood flow restrictions and it dying due too lack of blood supply .

At £1200 a pop for a pup they better come with wings like pegasus catching fur and feather day and night .

You will find a few Hancock bred lurchers in rescue centres but more than that you will find 10 maybe 20 times more lurchers of unknown breeding origins in the same pounds, ,rescue homes etc .varying in ages from 16 weeks too OAP dogs and bitches Hancock has at least 2 what I would describe as dedicated sites on Facebook to his dogs with rarely a dissenting voice on them .so for all his and his dogs detractors he has in equal measure the same amount admirers. So work that one out .??? -
The lurchers and long dogs of this day and age
abrasivewheel replied to Dbod's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Was pies owner from leigh or Wigan came across him once up my neck of the woods out with dog and his lad to me it seemed an even tempered dog with bags of patience it didn't try to have a go at my 2 fawn dogs as his young son tried to ride as a donkey and fell off and banged his head much to my amusement. I think a lad from Wigan had a brindle pup out of pie called either bully or Bob which stood about 24 inches to shoulder a lot racier than pie but with the same head . Mind you this going back 30 to 35 + years ago . -

I used it as an example and not too be taken to seriously. The example being that that you can not guarantee a uniform type dog as it will through DNA throw to one of the mixes in the breed sooner or later along the line . Mind you some of the claims to the breeding of some dogs made by some sellers some of these dogs lineage date back as far back as genghis Khan -

You will always throw back too one of the breeds you mention ie slightly more greyhound slightly more collie bull etc it's in the DNA or Gene's. Granted it would a ruthless breeding programme too achieve what you require but even over 20 generations you will get a throw back to a certain breed even skipping generations of pups but eventually a dog or bitch will throw back to any of the breeds mentioned . It follows the same rule as hereditary illnesses defects etc its contained in the DNA or Gene's. -

There was not that many lurchers about 40 years ago and even less just after the war the farther back you go the less numerous they are . Hence I assume the popularity of collie x greyhound or whippet collie x . Fast forward too today and lurchers of all breeds types etc proliferate. You only have to look in the local dog pounds in your area or the number of lurcher sight hound re home and rescue centres . All I will say is when I started out it was lurcher x lurcher with both dogs having the rep on doing the business and you was lucky to enter this circle and acquire a dog and you made do as -
Its surprising what you find after moving home mooching through some old photos found a couple of game fairs and this beaut . Whisky, blue, and the black dog sooty .

The creators of mxy and rabbit flu virus should be exposed to a human form of it. that is family gene specific and its suffering felt by the rabbits should be inflicted on the perpetrators along with there bloodlines for infinity.
-
Mxy, rabbit flu aur rifle brigade and hunting all year round has done for them in some areas were the grounds tough you find them in half decent numbers . But my real pet hate is hunting lamping nearly all year round . I understand the need for pest control and those that do the job full time or as a matter of course on there permission

There like marmite but as the previous poster says end of an era . My opinion is I have seen some great dogs and bitches run breed from Hancock and always fancied a true collie cross 3/4 grew too a 1/4 collie .hopefully may be able to pick one up in the next couple of years -

From what I have heard what's left dog wise are going up for rehoming . -
Here he is the scar on his left thigh is what ended his career basically before it begun . Then add to it a missed heart problem diagnosed approx 2 years later and that was that . Picture is in France were we come every year and picture was from earlier this week . I have learned my lesson and pups from now on .as for price if you factor in over an 8 week period £250 to £350 is about right . As for lurcher rescue greyhound rescue centres for a dog I would avoid like the plague found out when I went to enquire about a lurcher it's easier to adopt a baby and a lot less hassle free as my dog cam

Hence me never ever breaking the golden rule of taking an adult dog again . the dislike of other dogs is a result of him being grabbed by another dog hence is distrust of other dogs brilliant off the lead recall livestock no problems . But its unsurety of not knowing what your getting . With a pup the buck stops with you I think you can put it down too 30% breeding 70% time and effort so if you socialise take your dog out at least twice 3 times a day put the effort in in regards to walking playing with him feeding him properly and just not stuck in a run all day and expect them to catch space
-
I wont comment on spaniels as to me it seems only rightly they command an higher price . Like I said I was in a previous post looking to the future in regards too replacement dogs . I think a good price is around the £250 too £350 mark for a lurcher pup if it's got the breeding then the likelihood it will make an half decent dog but that down to the individual putting the time and effort in training feeding and entering i always tended to wait till at least there 12 months old less likely to strain lungs or heart and less strain on the rest of the body . After my last bitch died I didn't bothe

Well according to the ad one had been sold God knows who was daft enough to buy it . Plus the outlandish claims being made about what they could do win etc was unbelievable it was a litter of modern day lassies capable of winning supreme champion 100 rabbits a night and any other quarry plus if you happened to come a cropper and fall down a well or disused mine shaft so said cur would alert the emergency services .I mean a snip at 750 sobs .?????
-
When in gods name has colour or a unique colour dictated the price of a dog .was browsing a few ads and saw someone wanting £750 for a pup . I am looking into the future so to speak in regards to replacement lurchers . things like stand out from the crowd I would if I dropped £750 on a pup because of its colour as a village idiot . I think upto about £250 + is not unreasonable due too feeding inoculations pet husbandry. But £750 its extracting the urine me thinks

LR 9 lamps if you could get hold of them must have toured every scrap yard in Lancashire for them brilliant lamp and motorcycle batteries not today's sealed units had to top them up with distilled water or if you had none boiled water .and depending how you slung your battery either your coat was rotted or worse case scenario the arse of your pants .

It's about 70% to 30% 70% ability and patience and 30% breeding . 35+ years ago there wasnt that many dogs about and the vast majority was lurcher x lurcher crosses .And the lads who had decent dogs and bitches were crossed with each other and you would be lucky if you was offered one . And the genuine lads would then invest upwards of 2 years plus to produce an all round lurcher. And you spent hours every day out walking and interacting with the dog . Now al you have to do is go round all the rescue centres to see how many end up there or places even worse and the state they end up in .

I have always been of the opinion that the more time invested into a dog the more you get out of it if it be walking interacting with it socialising etc . I never ever wanted a cricket scoring kiling machine . A few bunnies etc thats enough day and night fur feather and a swimmer. And to be honest i have never had a dog that couldnt do all these but then again i have only had about 7 lurchers all my life with at least 2 of them overlapping. My humble opinion is certain individuals want it doing things way to young putting a strain on the dog and introducing them to game way to early . A dog i

No last night northwest the number of times I have come across them is quiet a few usually same time or earlier . The fact they not only have 1 million + candle power lamp they have 3 made me laugh . Not against lamping enjoyed it myself but rarely paired and mostly lone wolf . But why so early . Weekends between 12 and 3 was always the best as the boys in blue would more than likely be tied up with nightclub and pub drunks so wouldn't waste there time on a moocher . Also best ever ever bit of kit I ever purchased was an hand held radio scanner with all the frequency obtained from local CB en

Well nearly may just sat down having a brew at just after 9 when wife's mother says what them lights out side well it's about 4 geezers with 3 lamps about 5 dogs lamping . I mean come on a bit late in the season about 5 hours too early and more dogs and bodys than bunnies . They will be first moaning there's nowt about and as it's a warm still early evening whatever happened to mooching with the weather on your side good wind drizzle etc . And the noise my god it was like listening to an heated conversation in a pub .so lads it wasn't your careless parked motor or unlucky face to face confro
