Small holding - where to start???
Tyla replied to Tyla's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
I know the author and her husband quite well as I work on their estate. It is a good book and I think it's the way quite a bit of land will be going in the future. Have a read of Feral by George Monbiot if you get a chance, that's a real eye opener -
I've just read through this, a few interesting bits drowning in billhardys indecipherable bull shit. Is he really necessary? All I wanted to know is how Liams litter was getting ffs

You can't get them for £1 a bird round here! Too many people want to rescue them so they are £5 each from the rescue and just a bit less direct from the farm

Pulsar helion xq38. It's brilliant. Range but be 1000m + you can see hot things alot further than you can id what they are. My only gripe is that I'd prefer a lower base magnification but that's being pretty picky

I can't see for shit. Laser eye surgery a few years bad utterly ruined my night vision and wore off after a bit too. I have resorted to thermal for spotting and an led lamp for the run. The thermal cost a fortune but it's the only way I can still get out so was worth it. Loving lamping now whereas last season I was hating it with not being able to see

Thanks, an adventure it surely is .... it's a bit daunting if I look at it as a whole but broken down into tasks it's all doable. And I'm loving it .... there is something about knowing it's your own that makes a huge difference

Thank you. I definitely want pigs but got to get the infrastructure sorted first, access track, fencing, water supply etc. I'm slowly getting there though!

Does anyone have any recommendations on which breeds to go for the different coloured eggs?
-
Cheers Rob, a ton of info there thank you. I will deffo be in touch ?

You're welcome over anytime mate, I'll give you bell over the weekend. Bring the mutts and we'll have a mooch
-
I've not had that experience with ex batts. I've had years of eggs out of so called ex layers. I also find they are very disease resistant compared to pure breeds. Hope I've not jinxed myself now lol

Cheers gents. I want to go the ex battery route for the layers but will buy in meat birds I think

Ok, I've been asked to provide 24 ish eggs per day for a local campsite between April and November. They want free range and party coloured eggs and are willing to pay a premium. I have plenty of room and would ideally like to move them regularly as part of my land clearance system. I am thinking electric mesh perimeter for day time with a heras fencing chicken fort protected by more electric around the coop. Also planning to fit an auto door to the coop. I would also like to produce some meat birds for the same market. The farm is covered in scrub and full of foxes so it's going

We messed around with coypu in France on the way to spain a few years ago. They were great fun, we never actually got hold of one but bolted a few into the river

My next dog will be lab x if I can find one

That's true. Is there no one more local? My mentoring is done on my door step so it's not quite the same thing
-
I've mentored loads of people and never charged anything. Maybe I'm missing a trick but i think we should be encouraging people starting rather than charging them

I don't know why but i am slightly surprised that a topic about a terror attack in which people died in our capital city has descended into bickering so fast. It's pretty pitiful.

I'm not saying it's easy, just that it's easier if you apply some common sense. Getting caught is no doubt easier, more people about, more technology, cameras, phones etc. But on the upside the punishments have scaled down from cutting off hands or transportation so it's swings and roundabouts. People have always hunted and I believe they always will, it's instinct. -

Exactly. I honestly cannot understand getting shitty when you are blatantly busted! -

As I would, and have, when the boots on the other foot. When I've been caught I've been so embarrassed that the last thing I'd be wanting to do is argue with the owner. Not a leg to stand on so why bother. Sooner say sorry and scuttle off and try and be more sneaky next time -

About 5 minutes from my house. It's got about 6 pheasants, 2 rabbits and a roe doe on it. Good luck finding them among the bloody brambles though -

Bullshit. I own land and I don't want the world and his wife doing whatever they please on it. I'm sure people do and if I don't notice then it's my look out, if I do catch them out though i expect them to have the courtesy to piss off without trying to fight me.- 160 replies

That's what I mean about doing it right.
