I love to read. I'm a big fan of historical fiction, Bernard Cornwell, Giles Christian and such but i read a book last year that had a profound effect on me. Only book I ever thought i ought to be writing notes about to try and remember bits, its called Feral by George Monbiot. It's from a few years ago before he got famous and become so radicalized and stopped making much sense. It's well worth a reading whether you agree with his thinking or not.

gov movement restrictions ie pup movements??
Tyla replied to gibbo1973's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've got a litter of 7 weeks on the ground at the moment. It's been a right nuisance sorting out jabs and no doubt will be the same for micro chipping. Most of them are going to homes within a mile or so but I'm happy to hang to any of them longer if their new owners want me to. I'm lucky enough to have the space and plenty of meat so no skin off my nose -
What quarry are you planning to hunt and in what kind of country?

I've just taken a litter off my old dog. He over 12 now. Got 8 healthy pups from him too.

I guess everyone has their own moral compass to a degree. Sometimes it's genuinely necessary pest control but there's a lot of shooters who just like summer shooting and justify it as pest control. Im not keen on orphaning anything. Always feel bad killing milky rabbits so end my season when they start appearing and start again around august. That's what the seasons are for for deer. Munties don't help themselves by breeding all year but best practice is to whack the heavily pregnant ones. Pigeons get a rough deal as they are mainly shot during breeding season.

I'm a chippy but use a chainsaw a fair bit too. Got a couple of stihl saws, the 261 I use all the time and a 461 I barely touch. I've just bought a dewalt battery pole saw and it's an amazing bit if kit. I bought it as i have acres of willow scrub to clear on the small holding and bending down a thousand times a day was killing my back. With the pole saw I can stand up and nip them all off at ground level easy. Love that it's quiet too and you get a fair bit of cutting from a 4 ah battery. All that is cut in the pic was from one charge. I will be getting the chainsaw too if things go back to n

Whether they are effected personally will, again, depend on how many people die. It's not impossible that we will all lose someone

I think that very much depends on how many people die

Everyone has there own idea of what is essential. I've heard all kinds of justification for stuff today. At the end of the day it's your call but i would be thinking quite seriously about how well i would sleep knowing I didn't co operate fully at a time when so many people are going to lose their lives.

Just about the age where you get overly concerned about the cleanliness of your net curtains and other people's business ?

Some people like living out. I'm one of them too! We can't all be the same lol

Shit times ahead I feel. I've got work for now but been told not to spend on materials for this job and use what we've got til we run out. There's other projects we can do apparently but don't know how long for. Mrs runs a livery yard, she's closing at the end of the week and putting everything out to grass. Got plenty to eat and live in the sticks so we're luckier than many but it's going to be sore on the pocket I think

Dogs pulling of stuff they know they can’t catch. Good or bad?
Tyla replied to trigger2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Horses for courses again. I've had, and wouldn't want again, dogs that smash themselves to bits for the sake of a rabbit. I'd much sooner they pull up on the odd one entering cover than put themselves out of action for months by trying to be a dare devil. Other people obviously see it differently but that's my take on it. -

Tyla replied to trigger2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
No. But I wouldn't think badly of a dog who didn't head straight after it but tried to cut it off. I had a bushing terrier who would put something up, then rather than chase it would come out the hedge and tear 100 yards or so up the side and go back in to try and push it back towards the others. Sometimes it worked great and sometimes it didn't but i never minded him doing it. I like a thinking dog. -

I could be wrong but i think the difference might lay more inbetween day time and night time hunting than between different quarries? -

I never fail to be amazed at how blinkered people on here can be. Lurchers are lots of things to lots of people, what suits one man could easily be shite to another. There is a world of difference between the point and slip dog with the heart of a lion who will pitch into whatever he's slipped on and the clever mooching dog who can turn a paw to anything and uses hunting craft to catch there quarry. They are both lurchers but work in an entirely different way, is one better than the other? Not in my opinion, but different dogs will suit different people. As long as your dog su -
Where's the best place to sell stuff these days?
Tyla replied to Born Hunter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
I think id still be up there if he'd done that to me! A full 65l was enough for me! It certainly makes you appreciate it here when you can extract deer with a truck or quad -

I've got an osprey atmos 65l that I've used both NZ trips, couple of multi day back pack hunts. I wouldn't go any bigger personally, when it's full it's a fair weight and if you end up packing meat out you'll regret having the extra space to fill! -

Tyla replied to Born Hunter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
It all depends how far or steep you're planning to go. If it's just a mooch any bag will be fine but if you are carrying a decent weight up or down hill a decent quality and well fitting rucksack will make a big difference. -
Going to court to answer what charges?

I have had a thermal for a year and seen stuff I've never seen before in a lifetime of lamping. I love it. Makes any walk any where at night really interesting. No doubt it's handy for when you're out with dog and gun but there's so much more to it than that
