I can see the logic in that to a point, but it doesn't take account of people's different expectations. Not everyone wants to be a hunting super hero, plenty of dogs that would disappoint lads who are desperate to excel would make other people very happy. Why shoot them? No doubt there's some that are better off gone but I bet plenty of dogs get pts just because it's easier than finding a home for them. It's personal choice at the end of the day I suppose.

When I was crawling about learning to stalk there was no one there to tell me to get up, I just did what I wanted (no much changed in that respect) I think ive used things I learnt then throughout my hunting life. I used to be jealous of lads who came from hunting families but now I think learning from my mistakes on my own wasn't a bad thing. There are plenty of preconceptions out there, not all of them are based on anything much.

I've seen this dog change from a nervy wierdo with no manners to a functional mooching dog. She's never going to be a world beater but she's sharp round the bushes and will probably keep getting better the more work she sees. A lad with loads of time to give and no huge expectations would probably get more out of her than anyone else.

Sounds more useful than an actual horse!

Some of the places we went I didn't fit through the bush, nevermind a horse! They do use horses in some places but where we went it was shanks pony or not at all!
-
I had a go at that in nz, hilly thick country so its all on foot, no quads or anything, it's great fun but you need to be fit!

Interesting. Definitely food for thought. The area is 27 acres stock fenced but the stuff I want guarding is spread over couple of acres but not fenced off from the rest

Like everything else it depends on loads of factors, your quarry, your terrain, kind of hunting you mostly do, how busy or warm the area is etc. I used to let them hunt whatever whenever as long as it wasn't stock but now I'm a lot more careful. I like to be able to call a dog off if I choose, roads public etc make it a handy skill. That might be lack of commitment to some but it suits me. A fully committed dog would, and did, get itself and me in the shit pretty fast locally. I also like a dog to jump if it has to, as much for negotiating fences as during a run. I have a bitch now who's stead

Any recommendations for a breed to guard a small holding? Would be loose within the fence and live there full time. Permission has just been granted for a permanent site very close by and I think a bit of additional security would be good. Got to be something that can be trusted with stock though. One of the livestock guardian breeds maybe? I have literally zero experience with guard dogs

Why would they do that? On that basis they would be subsidising all fossil fuels on the same basis? As for not selling your quarry, what do you suggest people do with them? It's fine if you shoot a handful of deer a year for sport but if you are working to a cull plan, or even a shoot on sight order, then dealing with the carcasses becomes an issue pretty quick! -
Thats a depressing thought

They are like gold dust Liam, you can never have enough! I use loads at the smallholding for storing shavings and stuff thst needs to be dry, wife uses them at the stables as feed stores, use them as log stores, kindling stores, extra coal hole, drill holes in the sides and grow stuff from the bottom half and potatoes out the top, I've even made a fat trap and grey water pumping Station out of 2 for an local campsite.

Aren't they just Haix goretex boots? I get mine on ebay, I cant fault them but know lads who've tried them and hated them

In my opinion it's wasn't the dog that killed that seal but the stress. Absolutely the owner shouldn't have let it happen but if the rescuers had let it go back into the sea straight away I reckon it would've survived. I suspect it would be feeling a bit sorry for itself now but starting to heal up and certainly not dead. The stress of the attack followed by being wrestled into a van and taken to a rescue, who clearly had no idea how to deal with it, would have had a far worse adverse affect than the injuries themselves. Animals are far tougher physically than humans, I've seen deer, foxes and

We just spent bit over a grand getting a bit lump cut out of the old whippet Russell dog. He's 13 1/2 but he's earned looking after. Had it tested and it was cancer so will no doubt be back but he's a different dog since the op, put on weight again, full of beans, generally loving life. Hopefully he will get to enjoy another summer in the sun and we'll see where we are come autumn. I think we'll repeat the mating we did last year when the busher comes into season if the old boy is up to it. I'd like to have as much of him about as I can as he's on the way out and had to disapoint a fair few pe

They are both good designs, the second one looks ideal. I'd be a little concerned about woodpeckers in the first one

Body grips would definitely be the best way, im just being tight and don't want to buy more traps. Once I've made a load of complicated boxes I will probably change my mind lol. Anyone got any pics of what they use?

I want to set up a trap line round the farm targeting squirrels, I have a few fenns floating about so would rather use them than buy new traps. I'd like to mount them on trees as I don't want to be killing stoats and weasels. Whats the best box design and is there anything I can do to discourage birds from going in the boxes? Thanks in advance
