Bedlington x whippet taking fox?
Tyla replied to Salford black dog's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've never mentioned any breed other than the terrier crosses we were talking about. It's just my personal preference, if I was foxing alot I'd have a bigger dog. I mainly hunt rabbits so I like terrier crosses, it's nice to have one that can rise to the occasion if needed though -

Its not my usual choice of quarry but if it was I'd choose a bigger dog simply because once it's caught I want it over as quickly as possible -

Not all terrier whippets struggle, it all depends on the individual dog. If foxes were my thing they wouldn't be my cross of choice though, I'd want something bigger. -
That would be what I would do I think
-
I think it would depend how they throw, the one I have could catch or at least put in a good show of trying to catch all bar one uk lurcher quarry. Physically he was just a small lurcher but as with any first x there are no guarantees of that, they could come out cloddy or short

It is indeed
-
I would but I tried a repeat mating with her mother and him a few months back and it didn't take so I'm worried that I've left it too late and hes too old
-
Thats his daughter from the pat springer bitch, if she makes the grade this season I'd like to find something quick to put over her and hopefully end up with the same type as him
-
He sired one litter over my pat springer bitch but I regret never putting him to a whippet or small lurcher
-
No, never. Literally never heard him make a sound working. He was, however an utter b*****d for singing in the truck as soon as you went off the road onto a farm track. It used to drive me nuts and it wasn't very subtle, I'd say that was his only real fault. I'm talking about him like he's dead, he's not. He's 13 though and half deaf and blind with hardly any teeth so not the same as he was, mores the pity
-
I reckon he could teach most pure whippets a thing or two. First x whippet Russell. Probably not as fast as a straight whippet but hardy, clever and brave. I wish I could have him back at that age again

If I had to bet I would expect them to wait til they are nicely fattened and have cost some money in medication or something then, probably the night before I want to send them off, they will commit group suicide by strangulation using brambles they've lived with for months

I got a little present from @Sheepchaser last week, cheers mate. Hopefully these will start doing something about eating down the jungle, I suspect I need more to make a decent dent though lol
-
Whatever made you want to go to Brighton???? I live by there and only sneak in at first light a couple times a year to launch the kayak. The rest of the time I avoid it like the plague
-
No one can tell you what's right for you but I've been self employed for ever and can't imagine giving up the freedom. Nows a good time if you are going to do it, there's work everywhere at least round here
-
Its not a first x, far from it, but I put the whippet Russell dog over my pat springer bitch last year and kept a couple of bitches back, and another couple close to me, with a view to putting a grew over one of them in the future if they are good enough. If everything goes to plan I think they would suit me, basically whippet terrier crosses with a dash of spaniel. I'll be happy to have kept the old dogs blood going too and he's been good as has the busher bitch. It's a long term plan and it's meant next season and probably the one after I won't have a lurcher to run so I hope it doesn't end
-
Thats one of the things about them that interests me, everyone who has seen one says they are good and yet they are really uncommon. I'm keen to try for myself and find out
-
I remember mate, we chatted about it at the time. It'll happen at some point I hope, timing and parents need to be right but I'm in no rush
-
I was quite up for that a few days back but I'm not so sure I want to now. As I've already said I don't have a working running dog for this season only bushers so not much good for your chosen quarry. I'd have come to see yours work just for the craic but unless you are alot different off line than online I'm not sure I'd have a particularly enjoyable day. Not that you'll take the slightest bit of notice but I knew the dog you and SC are arguing over and he's right, it was one of those dogs that managed to do stuff it shouldn't have been able to. The story he told you is 100% true, it was

How about don't say anything?
-
In all honesty I've never seen one working but I love the lab attitude and do a fair bit of shooting and deerstalking these days so would like like a dog thats multi purpose. It's a cross thats been on my bucket list a long time, if I dont try one I will always wonder what it would've been like
-
If I was to take on a first cross grey it would be a lab x, probably wouldn't be for everyone but I think it could well do good for what I do. I've wanted one for a long time and when the time is right I intend to have one. If I was going for a smaller first x I would try another whippet russell x, the one I have had has been everything I wanted and more. Ideally I would just clone him. Neither would be hare dogs, before the oracle starts off on one, but I don't hunt hares so that doesn't matter to me.

Just when I was starting to think you were OK you come across as a twat again. Shame, I'm out.
-
You really don't understand. I'm sure they are ideal for what you do and I'm happy for you. They aren't the be all and end all though, no dog is, dog work is too varied. Just enjoy them, you dont have to prove anything to anyone. As far as collapsing my dog, it'll be easy, my youngest lurcher is 11 and retired. Needless to say she won't be coming on any trip though she'd have had a good go in her day. I'll bring some bushers if we come, they suit what I do at the moment
