  1. Here's my lad. He's my first lurcher and he's doing well. Stopping him from finding and catching roe deer is the main challenge at the moment! He suits my needs and lifestyle perfectly. He's a right old mix with not that much beddy but the beddy comes through quite strongly I think.
  2. Still got a few leeks, cabbages and Jerusalem artichokes in the ground, plus some sea beet and the last of the potatoes. Not got much in for this year yet, bloody weather but at least Atta has kept us well supplied with fine carnivorous offerings!
  3. Just had a lovely venison roast with home grown veg, living the dream!
  4. Cheers, do you know any more about him or website or contact? I'd like to find more information on how his dam was bred cos I'm nerdy like that! Cheers
  5. Great stuff, this is the sort of thing that inspires newcomers like me. Particularly like to see the story followed through to its rightful end, a good honest feed.
  6. "Gannin doon to the toon" howway man?
  7. Aye, when life was cheap but booze was cheaper! His sire is 1/4 beddy, 3/4 whippet. Dam is a right mix apparently, racy whippet/grey looking dog with deerhound and saluki! She's from a lurcher breeder down here called Nigel, anyone heard of him? Early days but he's showing himself to be a great dog so far.
  8. Think we have problems now, look what poachers of old had to put up with from the landed gentry! I saw these two evil contraptions in Helston museum.
  9. Zip is the double of my dog, Atta, although my dog has a bit of bedlington, giving him a bit more hair. Despite being 22" he thinks he's a deerhound! Great dog.
  10. Hello and welcome, I'm an ashington man myself but now live in Cornwall
  11. Oh yes I do... Oh no I don't actually!
  12. Suppose it depends what you're lamping?. A tenner says this will turn into a slagging match within 10 posts! It puts bunnies in the pot, that's what it's about for me.
  13. Yes sky cat, first lurcher, first hunting and a steep learning curve! After the first textbook rabbit he went on to bag two more, the last one he scooped up on the run. He had eight runs in all so I was well pleased with that. Then we got chased by a herd of bullocks and got stuck up to our knees in mud?
  14. Cheers, lots of reasons... Babies, self employment, lack of kit... The main reason has been waiting for my mate to take me out, it was well worth the wait! I now have free access to his perms that cover huge tracts of cornwall, expert training and entering, use of a very good lamp and good company. If I had charged ahead without him, I would have been scratching around without a clue, clumsily sending my dog after unsuitable quarry with inferior kit. With a few summer sessions he'll be ready to go come autumn. Besides he's a part of the family that just happens to contribute considerably to th
  15. Well he may have only caught a few buñnies but who knows, he may have taken something much bigger?
  16. Seems like most posts on this site get hijacked by some angry little man's rant! Thanks for the positive feedback from those of you who have a more realistic outlook and busy lives to live.
  17. I did a bit with the ball and just a couple of sessions with a training dummy covered in a rabbit skin until the skin fell to bits. My dog got bored with the ball after just a few minutes so I was always worried about the retrieve. It's such a relief to have that worry behind me! He did take a bit more persuading to retrieve the rabbit skin but just those couple of sessions seem to have made all the difference, or, as you say, maybe it just came naturally.
  18. After getting a few good runs on his first trip out, I've been waiting for another chance to get out lamping with my 18 month old dog, Atta. In my previous entry under new members introduction, entitled, First Night Nerves, I described my first ever lamping trip with a very experienced bloke I know. Although he did well on the first trip, he didn't connect with a rabbit so I was still not sure how he was going to perform. Last night we had perfect conditions, good wind, no moon, bit of rain. My stomach was turning somersaults... I already knew he had plenty of drive and the ability to cat
  19. Nice posts here. Food for thought. Only ever had one bunny while mooching with my bitsa (whippet/beddy and a bit of deerhound/grey/saluki), but have to be careful as the little beast thinks he's a deerhound and there are quite a lot of roe round here. Struggle to get out early enough having a young family but he does try hard when I can. He will get into cover when there's a bunny in there but I would like a little helper for him, a terrier or something. I like the idea of a ferret in your pocket as well.
  20. I'm looking to get a lamp for running the dog on and would like some advice? I live off grid with a solar panel for power so energy efficiency is important. I've got a few ryobi tools so had a look to see if they did a spot lamp. Would be great to have a battery that ran everything,( drill, radio, saw, torch and vacuum so far). Turns out they do and a pretty good one from what I read in reviews (American). Just wondering if any of you on here have any experience with this kind of light? Cheers
  21. Hello, I'm new on here... Well I'm new to everything to do with hunting! I got my first lurcher 18 months ago and he got his first outing on the lamp last night with a very experienced mate. Had I trained him well? Would he catch and run off into the night? Would he embarrass me? There had been a good, steady wind all day but, as has been the case alot recently it dropped after dark. We went out anyway as there was still some wind and the moon is waxing. Rabbits were thin on the ground and sitting close in so we moved on to a different bit of land... Same story! Tried one slip but the la
