You obviously can't see the bigger picture?

I know, I try to rise above it but some of the comments on here are just too easy to bring down?

I've got very little experience of running deer but most people understand the effects that raging hormones have on an animal (us included)?. Increased testosterone, adrenalin ect. You dont have to be an expert to work it out. Any fool watching David Attenborough can see that a rutting deer is not weak! Merry Christmas! P.s has anyone ever ran reindeer?!

What's the difference between pushing and pulling when it comes to deer?

That's what I suspect Bearfoot. Round here the numbers seem linked to the type of farming. Intensively farmed arable land where there is a lot of chemical usage, particularly glyphosate have lower numbers. On the higher ground with sheep or cattle, the numbers are higher. The biggest numbers I've seen are on some new permission, which is an organic cattle farm. It would be interesting to see if the rise in glyphosate use is linked to rabbit decline and if areas that are intensively farmed are also areas where the numbers are low. I may be wrong but I get a sense that something sinister is bene

Two problems, hard mouthed and no retrieve.
Attaboy replied to Attaboy's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thanks lads, just come in from a couple of hours out. Wind was down a bit so had to work at it but got 9 again from the new land. Got a couple of half retrieves but nothing to get excited about. The catches though! He got some really tricky slips that I shouldn't have let him run but he nailed them anyway. God I love this game? I'll take your advice and work on the retrieve. Time for bed? -
My dog is coming on really well, catching good numbers and returning after misses (mostly), but his retrieve is not great and he crushes the ribcage. My dilemma is, do I focus on the retrieve, encouraging him back while he stands there, pulverizing his catch or do I go straight to him and get him to give me his catch before he makes too much of a mess of them? Neither issue is a big deal as the rabbits are still edible, the saddle and back legs are undamaged, and catches are often at close quarters so retrieves are short, but as I'm getting bigger numbers I'm working out what to do with all th

There very sad to hear grompz?. I hope you find some game for your dog.

That's good to hear, a lab near us got caught in poultry netting and he's now badly messed up so I'm a bit worried about the fencing but most of it is off except where the cattle are folded. He usually ducks under it anyway, one advantage of a smaller dog.

I was chuffed when I found it and even happier when I got the permission☺. Really nice landowner who I think I'll get on well with.

Thanks, retrieve is hit and miss and he's a bit hard mouthed but he's my first lurcher so probably more down to my inexperience. He's a lurcher to lurcher with a lot of whippet, 23" ats. Wow 300 miles! I didnt know how lucky I am. This new land is just a few miles away. Have to be careful to avoid electric fencing though.

I see you're from Northumberland Rusky, I'm from ashington, live in Cornwall now. I would have thought there'd be plenty of rabbits around up there. Was hoping to get out when I come home for Christmas ?

Got my rollers in now, thinking of getting a blue rinse next, what do you think? Only thing is, this wind plays havoc with your hair, don't you find?

Just had a great night with the lamp. New land with loads of rabbits, had the first bunny in the bag within less than a minute. Sometimes it was hard to know which rabbit to follow, due to the numbers. I stopped at 9 as that's about as many as I can deal with easily. This is my dogs first proper season and he's coming on well, pushing them away from the hedges and showing great prey drive and returning after misses. Great night overall. Sorry to those who are struggling to find the numbers elsewhere in the country, hopefully numbers will recover sooner rather than later.

There are some real txxxs on this forum. A lad asks a valid question then the know it all idiots with no idea about the dog or the man come along and shoot him down, well if there's one way to kill a forum...

Had the old disco in for an mot on Sat, went for a mooch about while I waited for the inevitable.... FAIL. climbed over a gate up the road and found a bit of a rabbit metropolis. The Cornish hedges looked like Swiss cheese and there were more rabbits about at 10:30 am than I see on my other land at 10:30pm! I knocked on a door, and eventually found the land owner today when I went for the retest. Had a nice chat with a friendly chap who is very supportive of longdogs in preference to guns and will be having a walk around the farm, (organic beef) in the near future. I'm chomping at the bit to g

I do believe you got the spelling of THAT, particularly tricky to spell, old Hebrew word spot on!

I was the same when I got my pup. Get out and about and chatting to other lurcher owners. A bloke in the village tool a shine to my pup and offered to take me out. He ended up getting 2 pups himself after years off running dogs. I can use his permissions now and have a bit myself. Good luck

I'm using a ryobi led spotlight that runs on the same batteries as my power tools. It's very bright and long beam. I've yet to compare it to a normal hunting lamp but it works well for me.

This is all good to hear. I thought I hadn't done enough.

Thanks Bird, got him as a pup, only just turned 2. For various reasons I didn't get out much with him last season but he was retrieving then (mostly). He gets bored of retrieve training quite quickly so, like you say, I may just not bother. Like you say, he's catching well, that's the important thing and it's only a rabbit. It might come right again as the novelty wears off. meanwhile, I can live with being a Labrador myself!

I'm looking for some advice to help me to get my 2 year old lurcher to bring back the bunnies. His first rabbit on the lamp last season was textbook, but with cruel irony, he hasn't done it that well again. He started killing them which I didn't mind too much as he isn't messing them up but still retrieving. Now, I'm lucky if he brings them back at all, despite going back to the retrieve training with rabbit skin dummy. On the positive side, he's catching most of what I slip him on.
