  1. So....... what about those litters, the breeding of that dog. I'm sure the off thread discussion was fascinating but I didn't read it, I seem to automatically ignore posts by certain people now.
  2. When men were men, no ferret boxes back then?
  3. Cheers moocher, I like the idea of a beddy. How do you find their temprament for living in a small space? I live on a 50'wooden wooden trawler in a creek in cornwall. I know a bloke who breeds beddy crosses, I'll give him a shout. It's a good life but hard work with two young kids!
  4. Still plenty about there mate. All being well we'll have plenty to go at next season. Won't know what to do with myself now. Dust off the fishing gear I suppose.
  5. Condolences mate. Sure you had some happy times together.
  6. We'll, had a good last lamping session last night. When you are seeing young rabbits hopping around in a field full of daffodils, I think it's time to call it a day! It's been a great first full season for my first dog. He's working well off the slip, finding a few bunnies I'd missed on the beam, I just hear the sound of running, beam on and he's got them. The rabbits are pretty lamp shy now but managed 6. I gave up on the retrieve as despite early success he stopped bringing them back, back to the drawing board for the summer.
  7. What bushers have you got Boris? Thinking of getting one myself if I can persuade my wife.
  8. Thanks for the thorough replies. I think, going on the advice so far and on gut feeling, I should go for a little terrier. I'm pondering whether to try for a rescue dog or a pup? I got my lurcher as a pup, definitely the way to go having young kids, cats and boat life but not sure my wife would want to go through that again, so may look for a rescue, what do you lads think? Cheers
  9. Beddy whoppers?, beddy x great Dane, bloody predictive text!
  10. Thanks mate, my lurcher doesn't tend to find much when mooching, other than the big things that can get you in trouble?, so a little busher would be great. I am leaning towards a broken coated jrt, as I've known some lovely natured dogs of this type. My only worry is it going to ground... and yapping. I also like the idea of a beddy whippet because of the temprament. Do you think this cross would be the best option for bringing some feather to the table? I know the breeders of my dogs parents who breeds beddy whoppers from good working stock so that may be the way to go.
  11. I'm considering a busher to work with my lurcher but not sure what to go for. I live on a boat with my young family and a cat so a dog that is easy to live with and doesn't get under your feet or bark all the time would be needed, the lurcher is great in this respect. With no access to a garden I need the dog to not vanish on a scent when allowed out to empty itself as we're mòored in a wooded valley. The lurcher is pretty good in this respect now that he's matured a bit. I have no experience with this type of dog but I would love to be able to do some mooching with more success than at p
  12. Condolences Trev. That's absolutely rotten luck.
  13. Lad says he's got a jack russel...
  14. How frustrating??. My dog is hard mouthed but at least if he drops them, they don't run away! Maybe your dog has taken pity on the little buffers, like ththose orca that play with seal pups and then nudge them back to the beach?. No useful advice I'm afraid!
  15. Yeah was a shame., was hoping to see some action. No more mixy that I've noticed.
  16. Never did get around to ferreting there again did we. Still, had 9 on the lamp there last night. Farmer seems happy enough.
  17. Struggling for numbers where you are?
  18. Mind you, one of them loved the lamp last night, ran straight at my waiting boot?. The dog didn't really know what to make of that!
  19. That certainly helped last night when the wind picked up around midnight. The driving rain may have been a factor as well, literally soaked to the skin. Think the beam on my lamp may be too wide, scaring them in the next field. Just learning!
  20. I'm very lucky to have a lot of rabbits on my permission and I've been catching decent numbers, but as the season progresses, it's getting harder. Rabbits scattering as soon as the lamp is on. Any tips on how to approach this?Thermal is too expensive and I can't put filters on my lamp. Would a small led torch or headlamp be useful for picking out the eyes to find them and then switch to the lamp for running them?
  21. Thanks for sharing, some good insights into why we do what we do. As hunters, we are participants in nature, not just outside observers. We are a part of nature, not apart from her. Think I'll give fishing for basking sharks with a machine gun a miss?
