  1. Don’t know if I’ve posed already...........anyway.......I remember a local old fella who owned two whippet labs back in 1980’s. Couldn’t comment on how much lab. One was like a straight whippet other a bit stockier, both sandy in colour. He used to go ferreting and daytime hunting with them.......said they were good working dogs....no more no less.

  3. No we all just get our enjoyment from different things.
  4. I used to work two pure border collies to rabbits. I’ve had a fair few different mooching companions over the years and it’s not all about catch rate for me, in fact these days I’m quite happy to see something get away. Regarding speed........my springer x lurcher doesn’t look like a lurcher by any stretch of the imagination and doesn’t turn as tight, but she’ll catch more than a lot of other faster lurchers because in certain environments it’s not just about speed.....also I like a lurcher that can take a knock, has a good coat. She has good field craft and that goes a long way.
  5. Tell you what if I was after a pup for what I do I would have had one of these in a heartbeat.
  6. Just personal preference. Nothing wrong with bedlingron x whippets, but I would prefer slightly longer in the leg.. However there’s no doubt a bedlington x whippet will give you plenty of sport and would make a decent ferreting companion, but for me wouldn’t be my first choice.
  7. Whippets great, BUT ferreting whippets can feel the damp rain wind if stood for long periods. I’d go collie x greyhound/ whippet or collie lurcher x whippet. Wouldn’t touch a first cross bed x whippet for ferreting personally. or just go small lurcher around 21 inch x another small lurcher that’s proven. BE CAREFULL MOST LURCHERS BREEDERS ARE FULL OF SHIT.
  8. Just get a show bred one, with decent lines in it’s heritage, I’d be surprised if it didn’t work. Mine was off top end show stock and he ended up been a good a working whippet you’d could get your hands on. It would be harder to find a whippet that didn’t work as apposed to did work.
  9. Seen some nice looking beddy x greyhounds, never seen one working though.....Do you prefer 1st cross? My other bitch is 1/4 bedlington on paper, well her dam was bed/ whip, sire collie/greyhoundxwhipet.

  11. I have a working springer spaniel cross lurcher, about five years old. Dam was the springer spaniel and lurcher the sire, was an accidental mating of a gamekeepers dogs. Id post a pic, but the photo site ‘flickr’ is having problems at the minute, but saying that on page 4 of this section I started a thread with some pics on it. I went for this cross as I wanted a lurcher had had a strong hunting instinct which would actively search for a scent ( not much game around where I live ), some lurchers I’ve had are just as happy to play with a stick as search for a scent and most of their time
  12. Used one work two pure border collies......lamp, gate nets etc. Great fun and in someways more satisfying than working a lurcher.
  13. A bit off subject....when I was a lot younger I applied for a part time job, the interview was held in this lady’s house. She had quite a few pet brown border collies......nice dogs. She asked if I had any dogs, on telling her I had lurchers she told me a fella called David sleight used to use her dogs for stud to his lurchers.....small world. Is he still trying to breed the first fully brown lurcher/ strain?
  14. Oucher......that’s an amazing amount of posts!
  15. Oh yes lots of fun......and times when I felt like pulling my hair out waiting for the little black faced one to come back after going missing for half hour........only to realise the poor little bugger had been dragging a rabbit back for me......what a site that was......Christ knows how she used to catch them never mind retrieve/drag them back.
  16. Not hijacking the thread, but thought I’d post a pic of my two bushers taken from about 8 years ago......both cracking little bushers. The one on the left used to think she was a lurcher at times waiting for the other to bolt it while she flew after it with the lurchers. She was fit as a fiddle one day the next she got seasonal canine disorder.....straight on drip at vets, dead three days later. Had the other 15 years. Good times. Untitled by Short Straw, on Flickr
  17. Love bushing, but I haven’t been since both my jack russell’s passed away. For me waiting for the rabbit to bolt while the terriers are yapping.......lurchers flying back and forth in anticipation of the bolt.......then the chase......usually short, but brilliant....can’t beat it.
  18. Bit off topic, but I used to occasional deal with the odd Golden retriever.....they could be unpredictable snappy b*****ds. I witnessed one been handled by a female co worker....it was calm as anything then all of a sudden bit straight through her hand, she passed out and her head went clonk on the concrete floor......there was no good reason for it to bite her. Wouldn’t trust one around kids....no matter how sedate some think they are.
  19. Looking at that you’d have thought collie/lab x greyhound. Turned out racey considering its 1/4 sighthound.......very nice.
  20. My mate had a collie x lab......used to bring it out with me occasionally.........it could bend like rubber. Excellent short weatherproof coat.
  21. Might have been mentioned as I haven’t read the thread through........there’s a litter of ....merle lurcher x lab on gumtree
  22. Her hunting instinct is strong and she’s busy when out.....flying all over the place. She’s clever and slowly approaches certain areas trying to sneak up on things, stalking etc. Had a few things in their seat, in fact she’s caught all things. She’s fast to say she’s less than half sight hound, not much between her and the other lurcher, other can turn tighter and hold her self better over a long chase. She’s a natural scavenger, which I have to watch because she’ll eat owt. If I stop for a cuppa she’s happy to sit and wait rather than keep hunting. She’s not in the thick cover trying to
  23. Been a while since I posted a few pics.........springer bitch x lurcher sire, about five years old now. I only mooch around with my dogs these days.... so it’s a case of one for the pot every now and again, but mainly a nice eventful walk. Sandy one in last pic is bed/whippet x collie/ greyhound/whippet.
