It is a shame what a nanny state the u.k. has become, it is the people who understand the very least about nature and the countryside that have allowed this to happen through their predujice and niavety, people who know nothing of the countryside and how it works should not have a say in how it is run, it is crazy. The u.k. has become a nation of PC middle class city slickers who are so wrapped up in their idea of being fair and their idea of equality for others they have lost sight of what really matters. It is just sad that it has come to this, it is no wonder the U.K. has so many problems

Yeah beddie whippets are nice lil dogs, how do you hunt with hawks? Do you walk up the land and fly the bird at what runs or flys, or do you use ferrets etc? I don't know to much about falconry though i have always been interested and a friend works at a center that does hunt days to. Do you have much land where you can fly the hawks by you? I have a young lurcher that is just learning the ropes doing lamping mostly, there are some pics on my new thread. AD

Might be a bit wormy some rabbits can be, check for worms when you gut it, if there are worms then cook it and pull the meat from the bone before giving it him. Dont feed cooked bones. Raw bones are ok.

Quality mate well done, im sure there will be a thread on how to prepare a rabbit.

9 weeks is very young still, probbaly gets scared and forgets about the paper at night, when mine was little i use to get up every 2 hours to let her out, i slept downstairs by the kitchen for the first few weeks, lol, maybe a bit excesive but got her toilet training sorted. -
Hi, what are you getting on with? Good luck A few foxes on my ground also in the midlands that are a bit to cheeky, from your pic you appear to be a fox shooter?

Paunch one of the rabbits and stuff it full of dog mess, that should do the trick.

You will get lots of misses, just keeping going out, its trial and error, you don't always need to walk towards the rabbit, try and get in between the rabbits refuge and where it is feeding so it has to run back towards you and your dog, slip the dog as soon as the rabbit starts moving if it is far enough away from cover and coming towards you preferably (as this is when the dog will see the rabbit), try not to have the rabbits running into the darkness away from you. Wind is important, and getting to know your ground by day is very important to, you can then position yourself in the bes

Hi all, After SJM's advice on one of my earlier posts, i put it into action, only slipping my dog at rabbits that i thought were far enough from cover and had a reasonable chance of catching. Well i don't know if you put a good luck charm on to me and my lil bitch SJM but the catch rate certainly improved! So the wind that we have all been waiting for finally arrived last weekend, and i was itching to get out with my girl and do some lamping. I picked a location and then thought through where the bigger warrens are, where the rabbits will mostly like be feeding, and in which way to

Hi limerick999, i am pretty new myself but i think when it comes to feeding a good balance of raw meat, bones, pure vegatbale and ocasionally the better quality dry and wet dog foods should do the trick diet wise. What breeding is your dog? How old is the dog? how long have you had the dog? Maybe start the dog with obedience training and lamping rabbits before moving onto hare, they are a very different stamp of quarry, i think a young dog learning the ropes with rabbiting for a year or so would be in a better position as a hare dog once it has reached maturity and has gained some exp

Great pics mate, sounds like he is coming on a treat.

Hi kerrie, falconry is ace, i think you should look at running dogs next some great sport and very rewarding A sporting chance is always the best form of hunting with the dog or hawk i think. A day out with the dogs, hawks and a nice young "tom cat" could be fun :11:

The brindle dog is a really good looking animal, obviously very handy at the old retrieving game aswell Nice pics.

If the tory gov. gets in, which the way things are with labour at the moment they probbaly will, is there any chance of them revoking the hunting act? I'm sure i have heard someone say that is what they plan to do, but i am not majorly up on my politics, anyone know?

Get some thicker rope, like a strap, its called strapping, its very soft on the hands as its flat and not round like rope so it wont cut into your hand as much. Homebase has it for like 80p a meter. If you cant get any in time before your lamping trip eg. if its tonight, then just put up with it until you get some better material. dont tie it round your hand, just try and hold it in between your fingers so it cant cut in as much, if its to long then cut it to a shorter length.

Excellent, here in the midlands the wind is really starting to get up and its raining just a little, an ideal night almost, if it is like that where you are tonight would be a good night to start!

Go out lamping at night, trying to find rabbits that you can send your dog that are far away from safety. During the day it is very hard, espescially this time of year, i started off just like you and i didn't know anybody. I went out in the late summer 1st thing in the morning and at dusk, at that time of year there are plenty of unwary rabbits around but even then you dont catch them far out in the fields for your dog to have a proper run on them. You need to go out in the dark. What i did was, i bought a 1 million candle power lamp from homebase for £10, it does the job for st

I feed my dog bones, raw meat and minced meat with puree vegatbles. The bones i mostly give are boned out chicken carcases from the butcher, they are given to me for free and the dogs love them, bit of bone, meat and skin. I also get nice meaty chunky lamb bones from a supermarket that sells them for practically nothing, they are soft and have meat and fat on them and the dogs can crunch them up easily enough whilst still taking some time to eat them and clean their gnashers. I occasionly will buy them breast of lamb and just feed the slab with the bones, oh and chicken wings to. I also

Hi, so after watching the warrener's old way of the poacher and seeing him do his hare calling, I was wondering who can call hares? Does it work? Do any of the predator calls that you can buy eg. jackrabbit, rabbit/hare screamer, etc. work for calling hares what is the best hare call or is it something you must learn to do on your hand ? Can any people do it on their hands and if so, any tips? I have been practicing and i am starting to make some similar sounds but wouldn't say i was there. Look forward to hearing about this. AD

The law wont get involved, the owner is just pissed and trying to scare you. Don't worry, it is the same as if your dog went and stole somebodys washing from the line and ripped it up as far as the law is concered a cat is merley a possesion and you probbaly wont hear anything, the police have probbaly have told him there is nothing that they can do, they deal with crimes against people they wont care.

I think they would have a hard job trying to get a court order against your dog for killing a cat, it has to go through the courts etc. Dogs are put to sleep if they are seen as dangerous to people (worthy of going to court) a cat is seen as a possesion like a t.v. etc is so i think if you offered to pay for a new one that would be fine. An ex girlfriends dog killed the neighbours cat but the courts are not interetsed in something like that it just happens. Dont worry about it, they can't have your dog put to sleep and you wont get in any trouble either, happens very regulary, the worse ou

How much roughly are clulight and do they do a kit and what do you think is the best to get? I don't have a proper lamp yet, im still using a homebase 1 million candle power lamp but now my pup is starting to catch regulary i need to look at getting a good lamping kit i think.

Yeah i agree complete overkill to use 4 dogs! I also find it pretty unsporting and unecessary when you have someone in the background saying things such as wreck the b*stard, you b*stards, kill the f**er! as i have seen on another coursing dvd. A sporting sort should tip there cap to the strong hare that has managed to evade capture and gone on to breed and run another day!
