  1. sure is a good day out. never been able to get half as much as that after that day. nah we just use a whole lot of people on motorbikes with heaps of dogs to do the flushing. as i said, its a good day out with friends. sometimes we will get 30 people out and have more dogs than people. ranging from jack russells through to stags and now deerhounds. i have been out with fox hounds before and i think they have an unbelievable scense of smell. if it weren't for the group sizes on our hunts i'd probably have got a scent hound. but with that many people and dogs there's really no need.
  2. Skippy... yer rightio. i must have been half asleep. i hunt both on bikes and utes. we flush swamps with dogs both in the swamp and also positioned on thev outside. a few years back out and Balldale NSW, we flushed an 850acre swamp and got 26. but we reckon we lost that amount aswell as we didnt have enough dogs and the foxes just kept darting back in around us. my hunting is done around the Coreen area. its always a good day out with friends.
  3. yer that sounds logical. but that means that the deerhound will be heaps better than stags for me. most of my hunting with dogs is done through flushing swamps and timber areas. most foxes are seen a fair way in front. the stags dont have any trouble, but i reckon Hal (the dog) will carve them up once he gets into it. we also use jack russells for dens which creates a bit of suspense amongst the group. thanks for your reply Stevemac
  4. from the front feet to his shoulder is about 36-37 inches guys. well about the laws surrounding hunting... in Australia, as far as i know there aren't any laws to do with what game can be hunted with dogs. i may be wrong though. its a wonder the PETA group haven't targeted it yet. they are reacking havock at present by the stopping of mulsing sheep in 2010. but thats off the topic, i got him for use on foxes. hes a good dog, very obedient i believe.
  5. Matti. Clear deer fences you say? well thats one big jump if im thinking of the same fences you are! i used to own a 180acre deer farm in which the fences were roughly 9ft high???? we farmed fallows, when my family owned the farm, we didnt manage them but they still were there. if your dog could/can jump that fence, you should hold onto him for dear life. but perhaps not all deer fences are quiet that high hey??? good old deerhounds, cant go wrong..
  6. well this boy cost me $500 Aus. he would have cost me $800, but he has a slight bursur on one of his front legs, meaning that the breeder couldnt sell him as a show dog. hes roughly 11 months old, im not sure exactly of his height but hes a big boy. ill measure 2nite and post it 2morrow. the photo is taken with the picturesc Lake Hume in the background. he came from Moe, near Melbourne for those who dont know of it. im not quiet sure whether deerhounds are measured in hands or inches? but ill measure him in inches. 1 question before i do... do i measure from his back or from his head? thanks
  7. Here's the pup i got in July. He's one big ass dog!! what do you think of him?
  8. Hey Skippy. sorry, mabye there was something wrong with my PC, but the photo never appeared. i got the feeling from your message above that there should be one there!! my dogs from Mapleridge and Belaiche Kennels, near Moe, Vic
  9. I'll bet you can already notice the difference? the BF's have a distinctive 'hover' to them which i think is kind of cool. the vehicle also looks way better with those great 'tractor like' tyres on them hey!
  10. Gday Hunting champs. a mate of mine is after a nightscope. since im a member of this "Hunting Life" i decided to post it to see what anyone has. 'the bigger the better' he said and he wants to know prices. preferably somewhere in Australia to aviod overseas shipping? anyone got any?
  11. B.L.B. the dog was born on the 21st October 2006, making him roughly 11 months old. yer your not wrong. i cannot wait to get him going. i know that he's good with horses, as hes been bred on a place with horses, and our neighbours have horses - he takes no notice. hes shit scared of our cattle, as they chase him?? not knowing what the hell he is obviously. we also have 2 sheep which he has only seen whilst on a lead. he stared them off. there's one animal in the family im conserned about. we have a siamese cat that he loves to track whenever he sees her. he's not yet harmed her in any way thou
  12. Farr Out!!! Mixo and Colisi havent hit your area yet. i like your gun setup, coolest 22 ive seen.
  13. well, to get that, which has only been done like once! it took a bloody long walk. the .17 and the shotty echoe just as much as a .270 amongst the timber filled hills, so youv'e gotta walk half a freaken mile before whistling again after firing. i havent done that much whistling so im not that sure of good standards. all i know is to select a shady spot (perhaps at a tree) and stand extremely still. ive also lost a few because i moved. well considering you think thats alright, ill try to keep doing what im doing. thanks for your reply Ditch Shitter<[bANNED TEXT]>[bANNED TEXT]>.
  14. yer but thats a Hell of a lot of walking..... on a property of about 2300acres in which im the only person the owner allows on. i honestly didnt think it was all that good? i watched a hunting video in which 5 blokes went out for 3 days and ended up whistling about 40 foxes. (but when you think about it... it is a video). I've actually been there only 5 times, scoring 3,6,2,4 and 4. i reckon ive probly missed about 6 over all aswell. its like every bloody clump of tussocks and every log has a fox inside. there's a lot of foxes there!!! i would go spottyen but its bloody hairy country and the
  15. yer i see where your coming from. when im out foxing, it is quiet often a kelpy that initially runs the fox down. but the killing is almost always left to the stags. from what your saying, i get the impression that my deerhound will be good, all my hunts are done on flat/cropping and pasture land around the finley and deniliquin area. so when you say the 'smaller, quicker turning dogs' do you just mean the stags? or are you talking about X's of many things like saluki's and greyhounds? im interested because it may be good to have one of those as well, for the small - compact type chases. thank
  16. B.L.B. thanks for your reply. i got him from Moe, in Victoria. he's actually in the blood line of one of the current deerhound show dogs. however my dog has never been used for showing. before i got him the breeder put me onto a friend of her's whom has 2 of her dogs which he uses on foxes. i spoke ot him and he said that he had stags up until 4 years ago, when he got 2 deeries. he says that he's never going back. he reckons that his bigger dog would nearly break the foxes back when he hits them. he also commented on the loyalty of the deeries compared to the stags. ive certainly noticed that
  17. by 'pest control', do you mean becoming a contract shooter?? as in - getting a class D licence (in Australia)??? because if thats what your talking about, the pay can depend on how many kills you get, how often you go out and things like that. goodluck with your 'pest control' anyway mate.
  18. gday. one of the things i often think about when out whistling is - is the button whistle the 1 i really should be using?? is it really as good as they come??? there are obviously hundreds, even thousands of different fox whistles out there, with many suiting different conditions (climate etc). im in Vic (australia) and i hunt in the hilly country near Mt Beauty and Tallangata. so whats a good whistle for those areas? any tips??? the button whistle works fairly well. i can usually get 5 or 6 in a good morning, but im wondering if theres something out there that can give me 'the edge'. ????
  19. as far as i know, they wont 'over run' themselves, they can only be 'over ran' by us in whatever way we do it. hell, ive a deerhound pup and he's a bloody fruit cake out in the paddock.. he just runs round like a lunatic. personally, id let them run when they want for as long as they want. theyll know when their 'stuffed'. but who knows, i could be wrong??
  20. hey there hunters. ive just gone right out and got myself a deerhound for foxes. however all my experience has been done with Staghounds. so how do they compare??? i went with the deerhound for something different and my god.. he's about a foot taller than the stags.. Any Comments?
  21. he looks pretty bloody good. just got a deerhound myself for foxing. but i reckon your pup will literally FLY!!! having greyhound in him and all.
  22. i hear ya shell!!! got a twin cab navara with a canopy myself. it has swung out on my a couple of times. my uncle has the same vehicle. he has since switched and put some BF Goodriches on it. since then he has had no trouble. im thikning about doing the same. BF Goodriches seem to be the way to go hey? apart from that. the nissan is a good vehicle, plenty of power etc. the only other thing is that its a little rough being so robust and all.. but ive also got and old Mazda Bravo, with the same setup (twin cab 4x4 with canopy). its got a 2.6lt petrol. its bloody gutless but is much more comforta
  23. yer ok. i think i get the jist of things. thanks heaps for your reply. Hal (the dog) is nearly 11months old. ive had him since early july. when i first got him he was a timid pup who had been taught not to jump. since then ive so far been able to teach him to jump into the ute without any trouble. do you think 11 months is still 2 young? this is all new to me as its the 1st hunting dog ive owned. prior to me getting him, id always go out with friends whom have stags. your advice is just what i was after. thank for your help. much appreciated
  24. gday fellow hunting champs. ive got a queiry... just got a Deerhound for foxes. would have gone with the usual stag but wanted something different. do i need to train the dig to clear the fences or does he pick it up himself?
