  1. I had a customer who is a member of the House Of Lords. He stood me in his hallway and cross examined me on my 'exorbitant' charge to catch a mole that had been ploughing up his riverside retreat. The mole fell foul of a talpex within 24 hours - and was clearly operating alone. I explained that yes, I'd caught the mole quickly, but had it taken several days, the charge would have been the same. At this point his wife came out of the drawing room and gently told him to back off from giving me a hard time. Not only that, she made him ring me later that day and apologise for his rudeness!! Phil
  2. It's a funny old game. I got interrogated about my charges the other day by a chap who is probably on a 5Ok a year pension. "How can you possibly ask that amount of money for catching a mole?" I pretended to pretend I wasn't flabbergasted by the audacity of the old boy, to whom I'd given a full explanation of my mo only 24 hours earlier. "Call Rentokil," I said. "See if they'll do it for less." He coughed- up, and then started talking about a discount for the next call-out. I operate on a no mole no money basis. If I can't catch it, why should I charge for being a failure? But if I do
  3. This article on Bait Boxes makes interesting reading: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=4&ved=0ahUKEwi54vLogLTTAhWLIlAKHasfDYYQFggnMAM&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.urbanpestsbook.com%2Fdownloads%2FCIEH_Rodent_Procedures_Roger_Quy.pdf&usg=AFQjCNELzJeJ6gPNWgjdyAn0QRota9QDTw&sig2=xDqekPv9fZjwcLGVA32h1A
  4. Bear in mind a lot of smaller suppliers buy wholesale from Killgerm and then proceed to knock the gear out cheaper due to careless bulk discounting by kg reps. Having said that, KG' s customer service is 2nd to none. If I could give you one piece of advice to save you money, it would be to beware of splurging £££'s on a website. Unless you're prepared to pay additional fees for AdWords, a website alone counts for ckuff-all when you're starting out.
  5. I wish a few would relocate to Essex so I could have a crack at 'em. 25 moles a day over a 6 day week - that's some serious coin.
  6. I was on the verge of ordering a hori knife.... Then I got the bill for a new gear box on the van...
  7. Adult rats like to sit up on their haunches to eat. This box would possibly be an environment they would be much more comfortable entering, having overcome their initial suspicion - say compared to an AF.
  8. That box is a very good idea. Most commercially available bait/trap stations don't give the rats nearly enough head room.
  9. Thanks for sharing that. He's a real font of knowledge.
  10. I have one permanently wired in the set position which I use to make a good fit in the run.
  11. If only moles could talk. Then we would learn their weaknesses.
  12. Got me marshmallows soaking in worm juice for tomorrow's jobs. A bloke I know has also recommended a condom filled with live maggots tethered behind the trap. I shall also be giving this a go.
  13. It's just a bit of light hearted joshing. My next post will be in earnest.
  14. Just got a bag full of stones and a dirty look from the Mrs.
  15. Marshmallows are made of pig ain't they? No, not tried them yet, but I will.
  16. Let's just say it ain't putting them off. Now I bought a bottle of this stuff http://www.dynamitebaits.com/products/p/xl-liquid-worm All I do is pour it onto a bait pot full of torn up cotton wool and I'm ready to go. Depending on whatever trap I'm using I position a blob of soaked wool behind or beneath the trigger. It ain't a rigmarole to do. Too early to say if it's a game changer but the early signs are encouraging.
  17. After this evening I wish I'd discovered putanges before! 4 fat moles on my first job with them. Coupled with my liquidised earthworm juice on a lump of cotton wool behind the trigger, I now have the lethal edge I've been dreaming of.
  18. I'm doing a little experiment with fishing ground bait additive. They sell stuff like 'liquid worms' you can add to your carp chum, and I'm wondering if a squirt of this on a bit of cotton wool set behind the trap trigger might make the difference between a mole bulldozing earth or obliging with a headlong charge for a clean kill. Now I know there ain't nothing new under the sun and someone out there has probably already tried this, but anything to reduce the number of foul catches...
  19. They turned up. Set 10 against 10 trapline today. My first outing with putanges. I like the fact you can get the business end much further into the run than traplines. Also good that you can anchor them in place which stops the quarry dislodging them. On the minus side, side The gape of the jaws seems quite small. I measured it against the shoulders of a big boar and couldn't see how the animal could fit through it !?? I always set my putanges with the so called square more of a rectangle on mine turned to its widest lenght, and put the trigger closer to the jaws then probally most people and

  21. OP, you say the farmer had had a go at catching the moles before you got the job. I always wince when a client drops that one into the mix because it always seems to take at least 3 visits on a spooked mole.
