We're down in Devon.. happy to travel a little bit.. i'm afraid my UK geography is rubbish... where's Barnsley? lol and Kay... i remember the first year i had a jill coming into season.. i think i filled your message box with questions LOL.. thanks for your helpful advice!

I do try to pay attention to my ferrets but thats only part of it... i've learned an awful lot from the guys ... and gals... on this forum.. by keeping my eyes open.. Mouth shut and using a bit of common sense ... i cant wait to see what i learn Next! anyways.. please get in touch if you have a hob i might be able to use ... thanks

like said above.. i meant keep the size of the kits small... perhaps i should have worded it more clearly... as for how do i know she's coming into season in the next week... If you have a look at her vaginal area, it is just starting to.... loosen up a bit... not swelling yet.. but not tight closed as they are when out of season... she also has a very slight discharge which can accompany the same change... by my guess she'll start swelling in the next 3-4 days and be fully in season within a week to week and a half...

I'm currently looking for a small hob to cover my jill... I'm looking for a hob with a solid genetic back ground... no silvers, no splotches.. Poley, bino, or sandy I have a very small sandy jill ... Has done a FABULOUS job this winter ( just about 12 inches in length) who should be coming into season in the next week. I am looking to keep the litter small and because of her size i dont want to mate her with any of my monsters. If you are able to help or suggest someone who may be able to, Please PM Thanks! Heather

call the police? lol verbal abuse is considered assault... press charges... they wont be giving people and earful any more -
i DO love the smile that a good Sandy has lol

you will notice your jill's vulva start to swell... at that point, be sure her cage is kept extra clean (remember those bits are awfully close to the floor!) and that she has a bit more quality food and as always fresh water ... ( to start building her up for growing kits) within a week her vulva will be completely swollen out.. .looking a bit like the tip of your finger... Then introduce her to the hob....

there is a relatively new implant that is being used as a form of chemical neutering... it is being investigated because of a probable? or thought to be... link between neutering and adrenal disease which is more and more common in ferrets. The upshot is this implant lasts aproximately 18 months and then wears off... in this time your ferret will be infertile and remain out of season. At the moment there isn't conclusive data about this implant but early tests are promising.. several people on the UK ferrets forum have used this implant for theire ferrets this year and are keeping eve

only problem with V hobs... is it doesn't always work... i know of at least 10 litters born last year to V Hobs... at least 2 of them were "proven" to shoot blanks the year before....

carboot and pound shop fleeces here.. less waste as i can toss it all in the wash once a week

might sound weird.. but have you seen ferrets in season before ? if so.. then you would know what it looks like... if not perhaps capturing a good pic and posting it for more experienced ferret owners .. maybe they can give you a better idea... id's say if a hob is giving her a hard time you'd see a bit more than some swelling if she wasn't ready for it...

ferrets can really pack on the weight in their first winter...and certainly a proper diet will help... she should naturally lose up to 1/3 of that come spring and next winter wont get nearly so big anyways...
-
yes it is possible for a young jill to come into season this early.. even kept outdoors in natural lighting... i had one last year in November and several people on another forum have had them in season already this year as well... pop to the vet for a jab ...

yeap.. myth... or.. it is today! in days past pork was difficult to keep fresh well... hense us having it beat into us that pork must be THOROUGHLY COOKED! the processing methods introduced these parasites and made people... and animals i would assume sick... and to stop that... most bits of pork you would see would be cured in some manner... bacon, sausage, hams... which would be inappropriate for your ferrets for obvious reasons... but... like most things... we learn from our mistakes.. and the processes and attention to hygeine have changed for the better... making raw pork no more

something to keep in mind is hobs.. especially those big ones.. tend to be biggest their first year... they'll lose up to 40% come spring and then next winter the weight gain will be significantly lower...

lol tried all the standard methods once with a hob who refused to let go... apart from spitting on him.. which to me was just plain gross lol eventually hubby just cut the head off and popped him back into the carry cage with his friends.. he was happy to release it then and share lol

I actually do have a hob who does this consistantly.... our theory is that he's a bit big and just wants some more room to manouver... grabs them by the face .. drags them out.. wriggles around to make a kill at the jugular if we dont get there in time... This said He doesn't bolt all that many but finishes up after the jills...

Hiya.. there is a big debate as you see on the quality of work that you will get out of a "pet" ferret ... my opinion is that its experience and YOUR confidence that makes the difference... given time, encouragement and proper treatment a LOT of "pet" bred ferrets could do the job.. perhaps not as hard core as some excellent working bred ferrets but still do the job none the less... If you decide to try the hunting thing... Definitely get a locator collar and be prepared to dig especially if you dont exactly understand the construction of the burrows you intend to hunt. Though i will

we feed 90% whole prey and supermarket meats... Rabbit makes up most of the diet, with pigeon, duck, pheasant, chicken, mince, and other off cuts our butcher might have kept back for us... on rare occassions we do feed a dry kibble called Vitalin... good protein level and minimal smelly output compared to other dry kibbles. This is used when the flies just get TOO bad, day 5 of that camping trip and the rabbit's gone off or if i have a poorly ferret that needs to firm up their stools, kibble will do the trick generally within 24hrs...

i definitely go with making your own... its a fantastic feeling the first time a bunny smacks cleanly into one of YOUR nets...

Hope your all okay down there. Will measure my pair tomorrow sometime Are your getting bigger heather with there winter coats on now lol. oh yeah happy as can be down here...the lil hob is smaller than the other hobs but not by much lol... we'll see the real story come spring i think... and yeah everyone's got their lush winter gear on now...

I have a small sandy jill... tiny thing compared to the rest of mine... weighs all of 13 oz in her full winter weight... aprox 12 inches nose to tip of her tail... murder to ferret proof for though! she's currently living in the sitting room cause she SOMEHOW found a way out of the court... still cant find where.. but thank god she wandered INTO the house instead of out of the garden...

That's not a bad idea at all!!! Mine get whole rabbit, and pheasant & pigeon carcasses a few times a week, & I find they drag them all over the place. Apart from spreading bacteria around the court, there's the chance that ingested shavings might cause the ferts some discomfort. I reckon I'll give that idea a bit of thought & see what I can come up with! Ferrets naturally prefer to stash their food... somewhere dark and safe... i find they are even dragging xtra bits of food into their Den... for instance when hubby didn't stick the 4 squirrels they had for din

ok.. since no one has suggested this method.. i'll post mine.. i use fleeces and old blankets for bedding instead of straw or hay or shavings... cheap to buy... easy to wash... easier for me... and easier for training the ferret... it doesn't happen over night.. but i have 14 ferrets with 100% hit rate in the litter box.. it takes time... and patience.. and perseverance.. but it IS possible first limit the ferret to a single level for a time until they figure out where to go... a space of 3x4 ish is about as large as you want to go at first. if you are not currently using fleece or oth
