Hi Leo, hygranas are dark fluid filled pockets, the cause is inadequate padding or bedding material, so it's essentially a pressure sore, it could also be a bite to the joint, the treatment is drainage, bandaging and antibiotics, avoid surgical removal because the elbow doesn't heal well. It can be drained but will take anywhere from 1-5 weeks to heal. In the meantime the elbow must be wrapped and bandaged with enough vets medicalwrap to prevent further irritation. Hope this helps.

Is there any deerhounds about that are bred from the old anastasia noble lines?

Comparing spaniels and other gun dogs to Salukis is like comparing chalk and cheese, I've never had any problems with stock worrying or recall for that matter and to suggest a dog that has been unchanged for thousands of years is thick, is plain naive or stupid. Also why would you chastise a dog to the point it screams, people who don't or can't understand something always ridicule it. Collies and spaniels are biddable, they crave attention and have to be given direction all the time a saluki trained properly knows this. Also a Salukis behaviour is more feline than canine, they often will on

Salukis have run in the forley but not many and tony Griffiths shady got there twice I think.

Hi Cooke123 I'm not to far from you, me and my dad have had lurchers and running dogs all our lives, me 35 years and my dad 65 years and would be happy to offer you any advice you need. As you are a novice I would stay away from collie crosses as these can be easily ruined by someone just starting out, they are very good lurchers and you need patience and understanding. I also know the right people, when I buy a pup the person I buy it off is just as important as the pup.

Soak it in genson violet you can get it from the chemist and when it's healed up you can toughen the pads up by road work, when the pup is old enough.

A good dog will kill anywhere, but to say Salukis are no good on the fells is plain wrong, there will be some that can't run on the hills but they probably wouldn't run on the fens either. My saluki hybrid has caught many hares on the moors and many on the fens, good dogs adapt quickly but no dog that's run on moorland the first time will out perform a dog that knows the terrain, but I will say this if I knew that my dog was going to have four or five hard runs on Fen or moorland then the saluki or saluki hybrid would be my choice. My dear old dad has a collie deerhound Wheaton greyhound and s

Those hares are something else on the black land especially when they're a couple of years old and wise, I've seen top dogs given the run around down there, but to answer your question those guys who pay that sort of money are gambling with them, so £10,000 for a dog that can catch 3/3 or 5/5 will earn a lot of money, I have to say though it's not my cup of tea and never will be. I like the day out with good company.

Well said jeemes -
Nothing wrong with the kizzy line or fircruise dawn, there is a guy in South Wales who bred Mars and that is a really good line, mind you I'm biased as that's the line I have. Does tony griffiths still have his line of Salukis?

All you have to know is over 20000 years unchanged, oldest breed of dog, what's the old adage 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'. And yes there are some Salukis that are being passed off as pure that aren't, but that's the exception and not the rule.

She's the apple of my eye arcticgun, she follows me everywhere and sits on my knee and falls asleep when I'm watching telly, she's very keen and had a few rabbits at the end of last season. She is just turned 2 now so this will be her first learning season and then hopefully kick on seriously next year.

Easiest way to ruin a dog is to run it to young, its muscles and bones aren't of the same strength and injuries can manifest itself at a later stage, I can understand wanting to get the pup out early but honestly patience is the best policy, a puppy should be a puppy and not asked to do a adults job. I wouldn't go as far as to call you names but all I will say is if you take your time the dog will still do its job later on in life. -
I'm running my pure saluki star this season, it's her first so I will take it steady with her. Other Salukis I've had certainly haven't had a problem on small land with fences, it all depends on how you bring them on. It is important however to make sure you get the right bloodlines, nervous pups should be avoided and do your homework, I know for a fact some Salukis in this country have greyhound blood and are being passed off as pure even though they have papers for them. I know Marcus Parrish had Mars a few years ago and she was supposed to be good and mine comes from a similar line.

Nice pictures maximus from the halcyon days, out hunting without worrying about who's watching. Collie crosses are good genuine dogs, but they aren't for novice owners or hard handed people, shout or hit them or even just threaten too and your wasting your time.

Anyone Working Deerhound/collie/greyhound At The Moment?
Saluki71 replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
They make great lurchers in the right hands, they do require patience as they mature later but are worth the wait, my dad had his own line, he started with dick Taylor's mickey who won the drax cup in the 70s and a collie greyhound he bought from a lady in denby dale. -
That black and white one looks like a dog my dad had 35 years ago and he said the dog was excellent, we had collie greyhound, deerhound greyhounds for years before our land changed from field to fen. Anybody remember Eddie Jones 'Celt' my dad knew Eddie and he said Celt was a really good dog.

Just what I like to see happy healthy pups, they're a credit to you.

I think I agree with most of you, maybe common sense and good rearing is more important than science after all there was none 30 or so years ago and we still had good dogs and horses. It's no coincidence that certain people continue to have a good dog nearly all the time and now and again a real star pops up. Best wishes to all and thanks for taking the time to reply.
-
I think you all missed the point here, I'm not talking about rearing or conditioning, surely if it's in the dogs DNA from the beginning then the hard work has been done for you, but unfortunately at the moment there is no test to show this. Some people say the more runs the dog gets the better it will get, but that theory has been disproved over the years, here and there won the Waterloo cup in only the third outing that year and lammtara won the derby on only his second outing, his first run as a three year old. I could name literally hundreds of top class horses, dogs and humans who are bett

Now I don't mean the food you put in when the dog is a puppy all though that is very important or how you bring the dog up, autopsy results on race horses show that the top class ones hearts are invariably up to 40% bigger than ordinary ones and therefore can pump more oxygenated blood around the body more efficiently, moreover this means more red blood cells can carry oxygen around the body thus allowing the animal to run faster for longer, so if this is the case how long will it be before a simple blood or DNA test will show these markers from an early age. Maybe not in the next 5-10 years

Good honest answers chaps, many thanks. Most dogs are ruined by being run to young, sometimes by incompetent idiots who will never take well meant advice and some by well meaning people who get to excited.
-
I agree especially with the breeding, if the working lines are there then you have half a chance I also believe and this is only my opinion that the ability comes primarily from the bitch, if a bitch as had three litters and no decent dogs have come along why will there be good ones in the fourth one. Like I said only my opinion and obviously not to be taken as gospel.
-
Is it possible for a top dog man to take a below average dog and make something of it and likewise a novice or sorry about this idiot to get a top dog and ruin it. I have to say you wouldn't believe some of the things I've seen when out with dogs, we were on the fens once with some friends and two guys I didn't know, they had two 4 month old pups, I thought the dogs were there for experience until they told me they were there to run in the middle of December. The mind boggles.

Very nice looking puppy, he's a credit to you and the breeder.
