The worst wood i ever worked with, when i left school, as a wood machinist, was Afrormosia. That used to burn my throat and eyes.
I just use mainly Hazel, Blackthorn, and Holly with stickmaking, but don't really do much of that now.
If anyone has any of the early copies, of The BSG magazines, you will see Dave Owens and Bob Graham, with regular tips and methods,- most are now used by most stickmakers.
