First Time Sea Fishing Off Shore Advice .
Arry replied to sulurian's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
Try a spinning rod and reel maybe 12lb line don't buy cheap line as its some time springy and tangles. I would go for a 28 gram Toby practice over clean ground of a rock mark, When I say clear ground I mean a rock mark that looks like you are casting over sand. When you have mastered casting and the speed of retrieve fish broken ground. This will cut down on loses, be sure to have a few spares. Take care of waves! First day light and dusk for Bass rough and broken ground will produce mackerel in the day time. you could also use a spinning rod for float fishing for mackerel. good way to get sta -
Hi I live in Devon on the river Dart about 10 miles inland its bread flake this far up river, but if we fish near the mouth or rock marks open sea we use mackerel flesh no skin or top bait fillets of sprats with skin on. Mackerel just a ball of flesh but sprat you stitch in and out starting at the tail end then thread up the trace, then with two finger above the fillet slide it down onto size 10 hook. if up river bread flake you might like to use a smaller hook say size 12. I think its Rotherham mate do a deal with him, he said sounds like a nice bloke. i think he makes 8' mk1 collars as well. Cheers Arry

Have not got that many nets, but we ran out last year in a wood with over 150 out and didn't realise it was all one two old boys running around like spring chickens. Still the one ferret came out of a untilled hole a good 50 yards away at the top of the woods. Cheers Arry

I've a couple of good jills and my mate has a couple rescues jills we trying bring on. I'm not saying there better that anybody else's. The pair of us go and have a good day. All i'm saying is its some old little tricks we used to use, try it if you want. We have nobody round here who is taking up ferreting no youngsters no new people just my old mate and there all in there sixty's too. its nice to be able tell people little thing we used to do to get use out of trouble. I'm really am interested in the word you are using "jackers" i've never hear that before. Cheers Arry

I agree. No didn't mean it to sound like that. Its a thing we used to do if we were laid up, we didn't used to have finders and rough and windy day made it hard to locate ferret and rabbit. I never heard the work "jacker" is it local to your area Vin. Got the meaning now though. Cheers Arry

Like the grey ones with the white noses. Cheers Arry

Hi no mate used to do it before finders but now I have ringing in my ears due to somebody fired a shot gun next to my ear one night. I have a job hearing those little bells now. Obviously not to tight and at the base of the tail, also they seem to ring a bit more maybe the ferret shakes its tail. We did manage to get some small bands about 1/2 an inch 15mm in diameter. we used to lose a few but the bell were cheap. Cheers Arry

like wise watch TV with a beer or a glass of red wine and still knock out a net. I do six with a stripe though them then another six with a different stripe then when picking up in groups of six you notice if you our one down. Hard to lose the bright ones though. Will not be getting rid of my hemp nets but the bright ones will do most of the work. Cheers Arry
-
If you have a lot of net all the same, the help keep count when picking up. divide into sixes or fives the put a two inch pieces of electrical tape through one of the rings different colours for each bunch of six. My mate puts a piece of red tape near the peg on the purse cord this is a help spot green and hemp nets.

Hi Pie -Eyed I so agree. but there is still something about making your own nets. more connection, and catching in your first net you have made. Cheers Arry
-
Its a bit like Vin's tip if a ferret won't come out and you have another ferret then gut the rabbit rub the paunch on the back of the other ferret and put to ground. This will tempt the other out. another is like Pie-Eyed's tip put a bell on a elastic band but put it on the ferret tail it does not get clogged with mud so easily.

Hi In the Mk1 there are two pots upright components square one at each end they have a slot in them for adjustment, also if you look closely there is an arrow. Mark with a bit of tipex or some thing before moving so you can put it back. one seems to tune it in and make the volume louder the other seems to calibrate distance. I am no expert but had a old box kept turning the pots till it was the loudest and tweaked it now works fine. But if you want it done properly I think its David Arthurs you want 07951286630

James Sorry to hear about your ferrets evil Bxxxxxds.

Knocking on a bit but moving with the times. Wet today so I made some more nets been making them since I was a kid, but now I make fluorescent nets. I would only use and make hemp up until a year ago. Having tried fluorescent nets i'm sold you don't loose nets, much quicker picking up and easer to keep an eye on tilled holes. They are brilliant. Guys try making your own nets you value them much more and look harder if you can't find one. Cheers Arry

Gassing I ment Gassing

Many thanks for that. I don't think its that as the rabbit was still alive and theres no gagging that I know about. Really good info though. Cheers Arry

Didn't even know what that was. Looks like its a chemical that used for the control of rats and moles, is that right? This is a double post as I didn't know posted in new members as well. I think Bosun11 got it right in the other post. Been eating wild garlic but this is very strange. I read some where that tame rabbits can smell of garlic when in season and are attracted to garlic. I've no idea if this is right and if this would make the flesh smell so strongly of garlic. The rabbit was bolted low in a wood not far from a stream as Bosun 11 said with the wild garlic just about gon

I go with 5 months as Krawnden said running them through small burrows to start with just a few to start with building up slowly. Then checking with a experience ferret. Cheers Arry

I agree with One and Chicken Man also but would not put him in with young kits as he could still be in season. Is his fur oily still. When hobs are in season they look grubby and oily and off white.(if its white)
-
Yea had thought of that. still its the oddest thing. Also I thought you could use garlic as a rabbit deterrent as they are not suppose to like it.

The Huntinglife store on this site is the best price i've seen for Mk3

Hi neil I agree with Northern Lad and The One I think she ate them, try screwing the nest box lid down so she is not disturbed we used to do that years ago. I doubt that she will come back into season as days are getting shorter, I think i'm right that is the length of day light hours has some control over them coming into season. But you never know fingers crossed and good luck. Cheers Arry

Hi I'm my sixties now and had ferret nearly all my life, when I was a youngster we used feed them on bead and milk an egg now and then rabbits livers when we got them. I feel so guilty about that, we were ignorant we didn't know any better it was what are fathers taught us. We didn't even have freezers. Now with the internet we can find out all sorts at the touch of a button. Ferrets lasted 3 to 5 years now may 8 to 10 didn't know about jill jabs as well. I spoil my ferrets now (I think) vitamin malt lick, handful of dried food Alpha or James Wellbeloved through the day and in the evening ha
