  1. Hmm,...The problem I have found with the early reference books, is that the information offered, is frequently nothing more than hearsay, and is often woefully inaccurate... Whilst I am no scholar and have received scant formal education,..(which makes me a tad on the thicko side)..I was raised on a sheep and cattle farm,.. and saw many types of herding dogs. Very few were pure bred,. .indeed, amongst the bare -skinned Border Collie/Welsh Collie litters, there was often a Bearded collie throwback kinda critter.. These occasional hairy ones, made me think that the Border and Beardie , ar

Dont come on here too much anymore so no doubt that most of you I don't know but a happy new year to you anyway, in particular the ones that I have made friends with over the years or those that have helped/advised me along the way. I won't be staying up to see it in, I will be up early and out with the dogs and then back sorting the pigs.....thankfully that's nearly over!!!! All the best to you all.

  10. Everything that's been mentioned above,is the Main Factor,in why I'm doing my damnedest to sell off everything and move us onto a boat to live full-time...it's a step away from the Control and Restrictions of living in a house,in a town/village and being surrounded by people you absolutely detest...

  11. Yes, Ted's dogs were lovely Norfolk Lurcher style animals,. .they definitely had the film star looks, as did many other's that were around at the time. Ted was very coursing orientated,.. he had little use for a Moucher's type of animal My own thinking was a bit different,. .I demanded that my Smithfield 'look-a-likes' acted and behaved, in the manner of their original Herding ancestor....for,. if they were not tractable and easily schooled,.. then for me,.. the entire project would have been a waste of fecking time.... I freely admit,.. I failed abysmally on several occasions, and some

  16. Yes l noticed the Pycoumbe crook, hmmm. Mind , they did get copied and sold all over the country. This one was (crudely)made in my back garden. I agree with you about the supposed demarcation of working breeds . A bit like lurcher breeding l bet the old shepherds thought "Cor, that's a good worker. I'll stick it over my favourite bitch." With racial purity being irrelevant. Reading the "old books" l get a certain feeling that the writers in an effort to appear thorough in their research (Victorians especially ) had a need to categorise everything neatly. 19. The Mrs and girls aren't very keen on walking, so i drove 3/4 of the way up to the highest carpark. The whole walk was only 1.4 miles including mincing about on the top! They got rewarded big time once we broke through the clag onto the top. It's only a hill really, but gave the feel of being on a mountain top!

  22. Was there ever a more ridiculous statement than: ”Well, it’s better than (insert place here)” when speaking about decimated towns and communities in the U.K. ? I just had a flying visit back to my old town, 2 years since I was there and oh my word !!!! The town used to have every little shop going, fishmonger, sports shop and shoe repairs, hardware/ironmonger, fruit and veg, clothes, butchers, florists….everything. It was very working class but British, locals and ex Londoners displaced after the war. But it was well kept, decent folks, access to countryside….just ordi

  25. Isn’t it indicative of the terminal decline of the UK that New Years celebrations have been cancelled because of the weather ? I can see the Tyne from my house and live a couple of miles from the quayside. I’ve been out for a walk with the dog and yes it’s a bit windy and raining but nothing serious. Im guessing countries like Canada, Norway , Finland, Iceland will all have firework displays and celebrations with far more inclement weather than we have ! Cheers.

  31. The mountains, fields and streams is the cliche, I would add derelict neglected industrial wastelands. Those were/are the places that I've always been happiest in. I used to think that it was because I was out in pursuit of game, and it was/is. But not until I stopped going the those place that I realised that it was not so much the hunting that I missed but the places themselves. Ironically these days areas of outstanding natural beauty are fairly easily accessible, the neglected industrial wastelands seem to have gone and those were the places that were the happiest places to hunt. I know it well , nice castle, I worked in the Middle East for 26 years and travelled the world but I’m a home bird now, settled with my dogs and poultry, but I guess I’ll be back in the Middle East in march for our grandsons tenth birthday, can’t miss that. Hopefully a trip to Ireland to hunt with some pals over there, but taking it easy and enjoying life just now. Stay lucky! Cheers

  33. Poverty caused by tory austerity. A deliberate assault on UK citizens. The UK spends a fifth less on health when compared to similar countries like Germany ,Spain and France. That adds up to a sicker, population who die earlier and whose babies weigh less and have a shorter life expectancy than other comparative countries. The average UK citizen spends around 32% of their income on housing . It's 20% in the rest of the EU. UK Workers have f**k all in the way off sickness benefits and employment protection. Our economic model..rampant, f**k the weak and damn the poor c

  39. Here is a picture of a "Norfolk shepherd with his Smithfield" from the 1920s . I looked up wire haired "Smithfield" ACDs . They look exactly as you would expect an ACD crossed with one of the old hairy breeds to look!
