Guest Scuba1
I have read the topic on jerky and for anyone who is interested, I have built my own smoking / drying oven. I had some stainless steel flying around the place, but the normal galvanised stuff will do at a pinch as well, as the temperatures are not that high in this kind of oven. I have welded mine out of 2mm stainless with the dimentions of 50 by 50 cm and 100 high. then I drilled 6mm holes in it to take some threaded rods that support the skewers holding the meet / fish / game or whatever you want to put in it. It has a solid bottom and is now fired by a gas cooker ( used to be a camping gas stove as on the photos ) The temperature is shown using a normal thermometer as used in roasts in a normal oven. I use it for drying wild mushrooms as well and it works great. To smoke about 40 macrels it uses about one litre of sawdust ( not to fine) and they are done in around 2 hours. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/Scuba1/oven4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/Scuba1/oven3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/Scuba1/oven2.jpg If any of you have a question about building or using one of these, just fire away and I´ll answer as soon as I can.
